I came here to this topic thread as I have similar/same problem, but I was already running 19 for some time, until the 17 updates from the last week installed, needing my password, and then after reboot, unable to login keeps asking for my password at the login screen.
Since I was unable to login, I rolled back to a backup I have of the files from 9/29 since I'm running this as a vm in vmware.
I'm unfamiliar with the Ctrl-Alt-F1 to login ? I'm hesitant to install the updates and could post them here if helpful?
Apologies for thread hijack-
Solved - my issue was indeed lack of space and /home being full - Thanks all

Re: After upgrade to 19 system keeps asking for password
Press
Ctrl Alt F1
and you should get text mode login, where you need to type your username and password. For gettiong graphical desktop run
Code: Select all
startx -- :1
x --
and -- :
Re: After upgrade to 19 system keeps asking for password
OK, thanks for that answer. so these are the 17 updates that seem to cause the login password issue. Knowing now how to login, I'll run the updates and go from there. Thanks again.

Re: Mint 19 system keeps asking for password
If you feel the need to apologize for something, that's often a pretty clear sign that you shouldn't be doing it.
I split this off into a thread of its own. Original thread is here.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!
Re: Mint 19 system keeps asking for password
got it, I pasted some apt-get output to the wrong thread just a moment ago, sorry.
