Install Mint Mate over Ubuntu Mate on Window Dual-Boot [solved]

Post by deanr72 » Tue Oct 23, 2018 12:48 pm

At the moment I'm running on one machine windows 7 pro alongside Ubuntu Mate but I never use UM because it keeps crashing. Plus, I've decided Mint Mate looks better, runs better in every way etc.

So, what I want to do is simply install Mint Mate over Ubuntu Mate. I seem to recall when installing UM that I could select 'install alongside' or 'replace' a current OS but I'm not getting that option with the Tara Mate installer. Choosing to do 'something else' at the install stage and creating 'roots' and 'boots' and 'swaps' or whatever has only created massive headaches for me in the past so I don't want to go down that route at all if possible.

Is there an easy (i.e. GUI) solution out there?

Thanks,

I believe for "Alongside" to work you'd need to delete the Ubuntu MATE partition(s) first. "Something else" is the better way to go though. Just set up your partitions the same way they currently are. For your current setup run:

Code: Select all

lsblk

You can use Gparted on the install disc to delete the partition that UM is on followed by the installation. It should see the free space and offer to install Mint there. Just make sure that you do install it because you just blew away your grub boot manager and you will no longer be able to boot into windows 7 until you do.

Thanks, that was super easy. What I did was:

1. Boot into windows 7 and delete partition with Ubuntu Mate (took 5 seconds with Windows Disk Manager)
2. Turn off PC.
3. Boot to Mint Mate USB. Here I got the option to install 'alongside windows'.

:D
