grub2 problem

Post by wf54 » Wed Oct 31, 2018 6:38 pm

Reinstalling Mint 19 after trying out another OS I recieved notice that there was a Grub2 fault
Looking at the paritions when I tried another install the auto install appears to have added a couple of empty ones that's causing systeb to fail on boot.
So I tried another clean install of mint but it acted as if it was a dual boot and left the partions alone'
Then went to the forum and tried using the live usb to access the pannel and;
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && boot-repair
along with a few more surgestions for the command line too no avail.
Would this work?
I'm installing onto a 120 SSD, and the simpleton in me thoutht that while installing the system if I chose 'other' and then deleted all the partions and put in place fresh partition it shoud in theory work. Problem is the guides here don't actualy cover this, dual boots great, but not the possibilidty of a clean install wiping the drive and setting up new partitions.
Thought 30gb for the system 8gb for swap and 90g free. but it didn't really know if it would work or the best way to go about it.
Like I said an idiots guide if anyone has one would be very much appreciated.

now unable to load mint usb
is there a way to format/clean the drive to after hitting f2 and going into the boot set-up?
also is there a safe way to shut-down for the boot setup?.
could i put in an old drive and gain access to the new one to format?
what if I used an old windows or a linux dvd install dvd from the cd/dvd drive
It's screwed up big time!

SOLVED [I think]Re: grub2 problem

It appears that I may have repaired Mint 19, more by luck that judgement.
I was using a usb with UEFI and BIOS which was showing as two hard drive and I was only moving one of them into 1st boot.
When I put then in order of UWFI 1st then BIOS second it booted into the Live USB from which I could do a re-install.
What I'm saying may be rubbish but that's all I could think of that I did different from the last dozen or so attempts.
See if it still runs tomorrow :)
