Mint 19 boots much slower than 17.x

Post by mattzees »

I've been using Mint 17.x since 2015, and just began using Mint 19.

I have a fresh install of Mint 19 on a new PC which is about 8x faster than my previous PC. The new PC also has an M.2 NVME drive, which provides I/O about 6x faster than my old PC.

Mint 19 takes about 4x as long to start up on the new PC as Mint 17 did on the old one. Is this due to the use of systemd instead of traditional inits?

There could be lots of factors at play. Please post the output of these commands run in a terminal window. Copy the output and paste into your reply ensuring you wrap the content in

tags.

Hi, your kernel and user boot times look fine. How long does it take you to get to the login screen? I'm guessing about 20 to 25 seconds? You can reduce that by about 8 seconds by amending your grub to reduce the timeout. I recommend making it visible so you can interact with it if you ever need to.

sudo nano /etc/default/grub to open that file in a root text editor.

Change

Code: Select all

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
to

Code: Select all

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
GRUB_TIMEOUT=2
Ctrl-O followed by enter to save and then Ctrl-X to exit

Then run sudo update-grub and reboot.

Also check the BIOS/UEFI to make sure the SSD is first in the boot order.

If it takes more than about 5 seconds to get to grub, or more than 5 seconds to get to the desktop after the login screen post back.

If you autologin after this change I'd expect you to be at the desktop in about 20 to 25 seconds.

there's no need to change the grub timeout, this is not the real issue. mint19 has just a bloated startup and only way to get shorter boot time is to start carving down startup services,sockets and timers from systemd

So you think his 9 seconds in total for kernel and userpsace is bloated? And the 10 second grub time-out prior to kernel loading starting has no effect? Sorry trytip - services taking overlong is not the issue in this case. Reducing grub time-out is a no brainer.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Mint 17.3 was about eight seconds from when I hit the restart button to when the login screen came back up again. On old hardware.
Mint 19, on new hardware, almost 30 seconds.

Thank you for the advice though. I didn't know those commands existed, and will use them in the future to have a look under the hood. :)

For the record, I reduced grub timeout from 10 seconds to 2 seconds, and actually timed a reboot with a stopwatch.
From restart button to login screen was about 34 seconds. I don't know what to say about that. So slow.
It would be nice to have a technical explanation of what's taking so long, but that would probably devolve into a systemd flame war, so...

You've got shutdown time in there - slow shutdown would be a different issue for a different thread.

What's your time from a cold start - power off?

How long from exiting the grub menu (either <CR> at your kernel selection, or when the menu disappears) until you get the Xfce GUI? (most of the restart time on my computer doesn't involve linux - the time I get for what I asked above is about 8 seconds, with Mint 18.3/Xfce/systemd, about 2 seconds longer than booting to fluxbox. Shutdown is < one second).

You can disable

Code: Select all

apt-daily.service
and

Code: Select all

apt-daily-upgrade.service
and run update/upgrades manually. They're both pretty slow.
but that would probably devolve into a systemd flame war, so...
systemd isn't necessarily slower.

What's your time from a cold start - power off?

31 seconds.

I was originally timing a restart because I wanted an apples-to-apples comparison with Mint 17, which only took 6 - 8 seconds.

31 seconds to the login-screen? Have you got grub visible? If the big delay is from power on to grub then it's an issue with the BIOS/UEFI settings. From grub to login screen should be about 9 seconds as per your systemd-analyze blame output.

but i have 4 other OS installed with the same grub timeout. arch linux xfce is 17seconds mint 19 xfce is 30 seconds and i got that 30 seconds after really going to town on systemd. i don't expect anyone to rip their systemd apart.
2 seconds is not enough for me to ooops i'm brushing my teeth turn on the pc damm i didn't want to boot into mint today now i have to restart and stay next to the computer to make sure i time the up and down arrow key so mint19 won't load

the grub timeout is not an issue that needs to be solved. why even have 2 seconds and not 0 then and gain an extra 2 seconds

because 0 doesn't work...

In a single boot Mint 19 install the default installed grub adds 10 seconds of blank screen whilst nothing happens whilst the system waits for the user to press escape or shift to bring up the menu.

So show the menu for a couple of seconds in case the user does need to boot into an earlier kernel or access recovery, but save that time of doing nothing before the kernel even starts to load.

Ok I do actually think it's a good idea to have the menu shown for a couple of seconds in case it's needed. Tell you what - I will do some tests on my hardware tomorrow with the default Mint grub, and my suggested edit and a stopwatch and will get back to you.

BTW I'm not disputing that stripping out some services can help, but I don't think there are many gains to be had in this case, and personally I'm quite conservative about removing stuff the system puts in by default, unless I fully understand what is it for.

@mattzees - it's been years since I've used 17.x and even then it was only for a short time so I don't recall it being that fast on old hardware. But albeit you have possible issues prior to grub starting, and possible slowness opening the desktop session your systemd-analyze times are alright. It might be down to systemd being a slower init system but equally it might be down to 4 years of kernel bloat for support for new hardware, plus spectre and meltdown mitigations present in current kernels which may cause some performance hit during boot.

the issue is after the grub menu. i get the same analyze blame whether i have 100 timeout or if i move the cursor up down and wait 10 2 minutes.

systemd doesn't start until the grub menu is gone. systemd-analyze blame doesn't include the grub timeout. any more research into grub timeout is futile since it's not an issue, mint19 systemd entries are the issue here and user login startup (bluetooth,printers,etc)
i mean i can also set a timeout in my bios if needed which then doesn't start grub menu until bios timer is gone.
