Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
I've used LM 17.3 for a long time and wanted to install 18.3 on the same disk.
However, I found no options that responded. There was a screen that looked like it gave options, but clicking boxes had no effect.
In the end, I could only install to the whole disk and format (i.e.) destroy everything on it. For previous versions I could resize partitions, select what file system to use, how much of the disk to use, etc.
Is that the new way of doing things?

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
No, that's not the new way of doing things (also 18.3 is not new, but okay). Can you post a screenshot of the HD in GParted? Is there any free space? If there is no free space, you will not be offered the option to install alongside.

If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Too late now, I suppose, but what you should have used Tuxkid was the "Something Else" method. That's where you'll find the options you describe.

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
I've only ever used GParted from a boot disk, but this shows I have plenty of space.

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
I don't recall seeing "Something Else" but I do remember a box for 'Manual' which I thought was what I wanted, but when I tried to tick a box, nothing happened. It was nothing like the dialog I'd seen for previous versions.
Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
I just "upgraded" a computer from 18.3 to 19 and it offered to install 19 alongside 18.3 which is not what I needed, so I optioned to blow it all away and use the whole drive for Mint 19. The option for installing alongside another OS is definitely there.

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
It is best to free up space using windows disk management tool leaving space unallocated. Then use gparted from the live boot to partition as needed, then install Mint.
Keep in mind to turn off fast restart in windows, and secure boot and fast boot in the firmware.

Why would I make this up? In fact, the Installation Type screen is the same for both:

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
I wasn't inferring that you made it up. It's my memory of what I saw a month or so ago is defective. I can't believe I was so unobservant! I had a memory of the bottom one labelled "manual". Could it be different for installing KDE?
I avoid upgrading OSes as much as possible, so there's a big gap between the times I do so. An ailing memory doesn't help.

Turns out, yes. That's why it's important to include such information in the OP, so folks don't waste their time answering the wrong question.
Anyhoo, as far as I can tell, Manual in KDE is identical to Something Else in the other desktops, but I'll let someone with more KDE experience try to figure out what you're doing wrong. And, you know, it would help a lot if you started with the realization you're probably doing something wrong.
Good luck.

Re: Installing Mint 18.3 from USB gives no options
It never occurred to me that the difference using KDE came into effect at that early stage. Decisions are made as to where; decisions are being made as to what, I thought, are being made rather later. So I thought there'd be no difference at that stage. More fool me.
I thought it was implicit that I was missing something, not offering a HowTo... And, you know, it would help a lot if you started with the realization you're probably doing something wrong.
Good luck.
Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't imagining that I had seen the word 'manual' where other people saw 'something else'.
