Cannot Install LM19 from LiveDVD (SOLVED)

Post by phil996bp »

I've been running Linux since LM17.3 and I've always managed to get myself out of trouble by scouring the internet but this one is beyond me!

I have an HP Z400 Workstation running Linux Mint 18.3 dual booted with Windows 7. When LM 19 was first released I tried the upgrade route from 18.3 to 19 but this failed, so I downloaded the iso and burned the image to a DVD but this failed immediately after the first splash screen returning a terminal error "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init". I've burned three discs using different software and also downloaded the v2 iso but all fail in the same way. I've tried all the options given in the release notes, Compatibility Mode, nomodeset etc, but none of these work either.

I re-installed 18.3 and have been looking for a solution for this ever since without success.

The issue appears to be with Ubuntu 18.04 as this also fails in the same way.

HOWEVER, Both Ubuntu 18.04 and LM19 can be installed and work in VirtualBox from the same installation discs.

The error message spans two screens and the first one is too fast to read but I video'd it on my phone and managed to get it.

Does this mean my computer is too old for the software?

I hope someone can help. I may not be able to respond immediately to any requests for further information or actions so please bear with me.

You could try to use custom iso or USB, which uses older vmlinuz and initrd.lz in the casper folder. If using USB, just rename current vmlinuz and initrd and copy older versions from Mint 18.iso .... or Mint 17.iso.

Thanks for the tip. I've had a quick look to find out how to create a custom iso and it looks quite complicated (for me at least) so I'll have to spend some time trying to have a go... unless you can point me to a quick guide somewhere!

Unless I've missed the point and it's just a case of opening up the iso's in a file manager and renaming/swapping the files you mentioned.

I'll be back...

An easy way is to use Isomaster

I'm just jumping in here to say, #METOO

Tonight I made a LM19xcfe boot CD for my HP laptop ze4230 (2003 era) w/ 40Gb disk, 488Mb ram, Celeron 1.8GHz clock, WinXP
and it will not install from the CD either,
It does boot from the CD, But, ciicking on the Install icon on the Desktop does nothing. Clicking on the System menu "Install from this CD" (or something like that) does nothing either.

It also would not turn off when I clicked on "Turn off Computer".

The SHA check of the download was okay.

Too weak computer for Mint, try Puppy Linux.

I found a USB drive with some version of Debian netinstall, that worked. But I need to brush up on my system administration, because I am having trouble installing updated software (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.)
So, I guess you could say for me, and not for the OP, my problem is solved.

Thanks for responding!
(I'm a user of LM 17 and 18 on other PC's.)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried the "cut & paste' way to create a custom cd but the computer wouldn't recognise it as a bootable medium. It bypassed it and went straight to the normal Grub screen, so I must have done something wrong. VirtualBox did recognise it to a point just past the splash screen when it then threw an error.

HOWEVER!

It occurred to me that my BIOS version may be outdated ( hp v3.20) and causing a problem and that there might be a newer version, so I checked, there was and suddenly everything works!

Well I say that... I tried the upgrade route from my 18.3 and that all went a bit wrong so I ended up with a fresh install of 19 from cd and now
I've got the shiny new version.

Thank you all for your suggestions and patience, I got there in the end.
