Monitor works w/ install disk but not after install

Post by snapo »

Acer Aspire 5750, Mint 19 fresh install.
After install boot up stops at blank dark grey screen, cursor blinks forever.
If boot on install, works fine, using it to write this post.
Have replaced the following files on hard drive with the ones on install CD:
/usr/share/mdm/defaults.conf and /usr/share/mdm/distro.conf ... no change.
any help = much appreciated
thx, snapo

Nope.
running: Dual core Intel Pentium B960 (-MCP-) arch: Sandy Bridge rev.7
graphics card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Integrated Graphics Controller
Did try some of the suggestions to get Grub menu but none worked. boot goes straight to blinking cursor w/ no access to anything.
Please respond, thx

Are you single-booting or dual-booting.?

You have a Legacy BIOS computer. So the internal hard-drive should be in MBR/ms-dos mode, and not GPT mode. From the Live LM media, do a sudo parted -l in the Terminal window.

Which install method did you use, "Erase disk ..." or "Something else" or etc.? If using the manual "Something else" install method, ensure that the "Device for boot loader installation" is the internal hard-drive or /sda.

By the author's initial post, the problem is not the monitor does not work but the installed system does not load.

I have discovered that the Hard Drive has a password that I can not change!
Is this some kind of Intel/Windows ploy to keep us from installing Linux?
How can I tell the boot-up to use the password, which I can plainly see.
May be nothing to it, I don't know but ...

Thanks,

Are you sure that the hard disk has a password or is it a password that's set in BIOS.

Check your BIOS settings for any kind of password and disable that option.

Also, does holding down the left Shift key when you boot the installed version on disk bring up the GRUB menu?

Password WAS in BIOS but now gone.( I did not put it there, nor did I remove it! )
LEFT-SHIFT on boot up does nothing.
Only blank screen forever.

Acer Aspire 5750Z
Dual core Intel Pentium B960 (-MCP-) arch: Sandy Bridge rev.7
Intel 2nd Generation Core Integrated Graphics Controller

Fresh install Mint 19, used Erase Disk option. Previous OS was Ubuntu 14.04, no problems w/ that install.
Older version of Ubuntu before that one.( 14.04 )
Some have said they had trouble installing linux on this machine, I've had none until now.

Thx,
