not able to boot in fresh install

Post by xnikos »

Hi, I'm not able to boot into mint 19 - XFCE after fresh install,
the system is an ASUS L402MA-WX0065D laptop, dual boot with win10
liveUSB works fine and installation went fine with no problems
after the mint logo it stucks on:

[ 1.921896] Couldn't get size: 0x800000000000000e
[ 1.921952] MODSIGN: Couldn't get UEFI db list
[ 1.922094] Couldn't get size: 0x800000000000000e

BusyBox v1.27.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.27.2-2ubuntu3) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

2st picture was first attempt to boot

secure boot seems to be disabled...

I use mint on an other laptop for years and I installed it on several laptops but I never faced this problem
I would be very happy to get any help and start using my new(used) laptop :)

Certain OEM Win 8.x/10 computers, eg Acer, Asus and HP, have an obstructive or pro-M$ BIOS Setup setting for "select an UEFI file as trusted for executing",(= the Live Linux USB or just-installed Linux cannot boot). For the fix, please refer to ...

thanks for your answer,
I did some of the above when I installed mint in a Dell XPS
I'm afraid my ASUS bios menu is totally different!
I forgot to mention that grub installed just fine, I tried boot repair too with no success

https://5azrocks.blogspot.com/2014/05/g ... l.html?m=0 - Guide To Install Linux Mint 16 In Dual Boot With Windows in Legacy BIOS mode.

Ensure that Secure Boot, Fast Boot and CSM(or Legacy BIOS) are disabled in BIOS Setup, Fast Startup is disabled in Win 10/8.1(>Control Panel >Power options) and the Live LM media(DVD or USB-stick) is booted in UEFI mode from the Boot Menu in BIOS Setup.

To dual-boot, you only need to pre-shrink the Windows partition if you intend to use the manual "Something else" install method, ie no need to do so if you intend to use the automatic "install LM alongside Windows Boot Manager" method, which will be followed by the LM Installer auto-partitioning the disk and auto-installing the Linux Grub bootloader onto the Windows EFI System Partition(ESP). Only a root / and swap partition(or Swap file for LM 19) will be auto-created with a total default size of about 20GB. The user will be given the option to increase this default size by moving a slider on the colored Partition table, subject to the maximum available free space in the Windows partition.

For the "Something else" install method, manually partition the pre-shrunk free space accordingly, eg 50GB for / or Root, 1.5X RAM size for Swap(at the end of this space)[the Swap partition is no longer needed for LM 19 bc a 2GB Swap file will be auto-created instead] and 200GB for Home partition; and ensure that the "Device for boot loader installation" is the Windows EFI System Partition(= ESP = fat32/about 104MB/mount point is /boot/efi or flagged as boot, esp) which is usually dev/sda1.

The above guide is for an unencrypted install.

I'm very happy to say I did it!!!
It wasn't a bios-uefi thing (I think so), I went through grub repair for 5th time...but this time first I created a small partition with no file system for the bios (as I was asked by grub repair / manual) and then recreated grub 2, and although I didn't change original place (sda), this time it booted!
But it booted directly on mint -no Grub screen so no windows10 too- but I hope I can fix this with grub repair.
Thank you very much for helping me!

well I thought it would be easy to fix grub (not showing up) but I didn't manage it with 'boot repair' and automatic,
I'm not sure how to procced with manual...
for now it boots directly to mint 19, no Grub screen
any idea???
