[SOLVED] Error in Mint 19 32bit boot from USB

Post by Angelo_C »

Hello!

is the first time I write here, and also I'm not a native english speaker, so forgive me for all language and content errors.
Moreover is the first time I install a Linux distro.

I'm working on an old Asus desktop , AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core 4400+ processor, with 2GB of RAM. It's currently running a Windows Xp 2002 version and I want to change OS to make it faster and ready for the daily use.
I'm trying to install Mint 19 cinnamon 32bit on my desktop.
I created the live USB using Etcher and done all the checks of .iso integrity from the official Mint installation guide.

When start Mint from USB the following errors appears:

Code: Select all

Hi Angelo_C, Welcome.

I can not decipher what might be the problem there. However I can offer this:

If you want to change the OS to make it faster, then Xfce will be faster, not Cinnamon.

Also, that CPU is 64 bit, so you can use that version if you want to.

From my experience of using Etcher it will only create an UEFI mode USB session. Or at least that is how it seems to work for me(I do see it creating /boot/uefi each time and placing the files there instead) and but it never boots for me on an older similar XP aged pc. So, Rufus, or Unetbootin or one of those options is the only thing that succeeds for me.

If this has something to do with ACPI problems then you will have to dig around in your BIOS and change the settings. Look in advanced section. check in power area. Not sure what the setting will be called on any particular BIOS. Also if there is a settings that is specifically set to "Windows", change that. -maybe something about boot mode or type. Some systems use tables that are not generic if they are specific to booting a Windows OS.

Hi zcot,

thank you for your help.

I've tried to create the USB using Rufus as suggested, but this doesn't solve the problem.
I've also tried the 64bit version but nothing changed.
I've changed also the ACPI power settings, trying all the possible choices (S1, S3 and S1&S3).

The error is always the same.

Did you try to start in compatibility mode? When you boot, stop the countdown timer by pressing a key.

This is not a very interesting setting. (that handles how the system will handle suspend and hibernation modes)

Please give the model number of the Asus desktop and I will try to find what the exact settings are dealing with on this particular model of BIOS.

Thank you again zcot for your help.

I've tried to start the compatibility mode, and i've installed cinnamon 64bit, removing Windows XP.

The new problem is that when I restart the pc again Mint starts in Fallback mode (as did before when the normal boot failed), saying that cinnamon crashed.

I've tried to find the pc model both from the mint terminal and the BIOS.

I've tried the command 'dmidecode -t system' in terminal and obtained

Code: Select all

# dmidecode 3.1
Getting SMBIOS data from sysfs.
SMBIOS 2.4 present.

Handle 0x0001, DMI type 1, 27 bytes
System Information

		Version: System Version
		Serial Number: System Serial Number
		UUID: 0023B10A-F1A6-DC11-8FEB-001E8C17F938
		Wake-up Type: Power Switch
		SKU Number:
		Family:

Handle 0x003A, DMI type 32, 11 bytes
System Boot Information
		Status: No errors detected
with no information.

The BIOS type is Phoenix - AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility, but searching in it I can't find infos about the desktop model.

Ok, great. So that seems like a candidate for "solving freezes" as explained in the Mint release notes. -that's typically the most common struggle when the system is in a non-detectable graphics hardware scenario. Give the nomodeset parameter a try temporarily and see if that works and give it a quick read in that section to see if any of that seems relevant.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this will help but I've recently had a problem with LM19 not loading from a live cd on my hp desktop computer. The error messages suggested an acpi problem.

I found the BIOS software version was outdated so I upgraded it and solved the problem so it might be worth checking.

Hi, oh, I didn't see this yesterday.

Firstly, Xfce(or MATE) will run more efficiently on this 2GB dual-core 2.3GHz system, although that's just a preference if you are interested. But that's not about a hardware functionality problem.

Next, It looks like there are updates for the BIOS on this system which you should check out, maybe you will want to install those. I don't see any obvious bug fix that looks interesting based on that cpu chip specifically, but see some shared memory fixes that might be of interest, and at the least Version 1705 might have something useful. Anyway I'm looking here: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2AVM ... _Download/

For the situation at hand, I'm looking at the manual here: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/s ... m-hdmi.pdf

It looks like the easiest first try would be to change to: Plug & Play O/S [YES]

..see if that has any change.

If it did not change, then run this terminal command and share the results with us: dmesg (or paste all that info to a pastebin.com or dpaste site, or instead use command dmesg | nc termbin.com 9999 and show us the url)

Hi,

I've tried to change the Plug & Play O/S to [YES], but nothing changes.
Here are the information from dmesg before

https://termbin.com/ml7p

and after

https://termbin.com/wv7e

the changes to the Plug & Play settings.

Thank you again

Mint Cinnamon is not going to work with current hardware. I tried that with a sort of similar Toshiba laptop. It ALWAYS went back to Fallback mode. Mint Mate worked well and can be made to have a decent appearance. Mint XFCE would also work well, but is kinda "flat" in appearance.

Using a 32 bit version is not a problem with your current hardware. The main consequence of using a 32 bit OS is memory addressing - it will only address no more than 4GB of RAM. The software may "see" more RAM, but it will not be used. Again, my older Toshiba laptop runs Mint Mate 32 bit very nicely.

If you still have boot problems, please see https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... ot Options.

All this of course is based on the assumption that the .iso download checksum is correct.

you should look into BIOS updates, those are bugs reported that can not be fixed with software or kernel change.

Also, previously mentioned Cinnamon is not going to do well in the system.

Thank you all very much for the help.

As suggested in the last replies I've tried with Mate, without touching the BIOS (maybe I'll update it in future), and worked.
