(Solved) GRUB installation failed.

Post by Matthew_Wai » Mon Dec 31, 2018 10:33 am

When I tried to clean install Mint in UEFI mode, I got the error message "GRUB installation failed" saying that "The 'grub-pc' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot."

Please help.

It seems, that You have already one OS installed (Windows 7/10?) in BIOS compatibility mode. Your hardware supports contemporary UEFI mode. Can You tell us more precisely what do You want to achieve: a) dual boot mode, b) single Linux installation. If a) - then what about disk partitioning (GPT, or old BIOS?).

Thanks for your reply. I found the solution to "GRUB installation failed" at https://www.itzgeek.com/how-tos/linux/u ... ystem.html
I created a 500 MB "EFI System Partition" before the "Ext4 journaling file system" partition. Then I successfully clean installed Mint 19.1 in UEFI mode.

why such a large EFI System Partition? If you check the partition, how much of it was actually used for the files in it? Seems a waste of drive space which could better be used in other partitions.

The following is quoted from: https://www.itzgeek.com/how-tos/linux/u ... ystem.html

UEFI System:

EFI – 500MB

it's alright - - 500Mb could be considered some over-kill
:o
but, since it's working - - then just leave it alone.

What size would you recommend if I were to clean install Mint?

most likely, something around 200Mb in size for that EFI partition.

but, on any modern, jumbo sized drive, it's not that critical, anyway.

https://itsfoss.com/swap-size/
After reading the above, I think my 8192-MB swap area is much too large as I have 6 GB of RAM.

You may not even need a swap file with 6 GB of RAM. Or could probably be more than OK with just a 2GB swap file. I run my "swappiness" about 10-20 also, to only use it as more a necessity. RAM keeps things going faster, than something in a HDD file, not so bad if using a fast SSD.
