Hello, nouser.

You need to go through the logfile /var/log/apt/term.log and find out the details, why mint-meta-cinnamon, mint-meta-core, cinnamon and cinnamon-control-center cannot be installed.
Then you have to solve the root cause of this problem.
If you are lucky sudo dpkg --configure -a will achieve this goal.
Or this command helps you find out the package(s) which prevent mintupgrade from succeeding, like in my case.
But it may also be that fixing is more complicated. Like so often in life, it depends on the details.

Once the root cause has been resolved, you have to re-launch mintupgrade upgrade

Best regards and good luck,
Karl

Hi Karl,
sudo dpkg --configure -a did not change the situation and mintupgrade upgrade is not available anymore.

I consider going back to 18.3 with Timeshift. Would this work?

Answer: Yes this works.

Back to the beginning. Not sure how I would to proceed from here.

Hi, nouser.

Seems you have not taken the time to find the details about what made "mintupgrade upgrade" fail in the file /var/log/apt/term.log.
/var/log/apt/term.log holds all the apt activities, which mintupgrade executed. Basically it holds almost all messages, which were displayed on the screen while mintupgrade was still in progress.

sudo dpkg --configure -a will have displayed some messages. It must have, because mintupgrade failed due to broken or half- or unconfigured packages.
You have not posted these messages. So we cannot tell the root cause, why mintupgrade failed.

By restoring a Timeshift backup, you basically nuked all pieces of evidence and made it impossible to identify the root cause and fix it.
You simply returned to "Start". So it is more than likely that another "mintupgrade upgrade" will abort like the previous one.

Best regards,
Karl

Hi Karl,

at that moment it was more important to have a running system for me, I had little time to mess around with the system. I intent to clean up the installation and give a second try ASAP when I have some ample time to spend on root cause analyisis. However, I consider doing a clean installation as an option as well.

 the better and probably quicker option.
