Live USB boot UEFI [SOLVED]
Linux Mint 19.1 MATE.
Copied to 16GB USB stick using Unetbootin.
HP HPQ130 Computer. Win10. Quickstart disabled. BIOS set to boot from USB.
Computer shut down and restarted.
See some USB activity but computer boots into Windows.
Also tried different USB stick copied with Rufus.
What else can I try?

Re: Live USB boot UEFI
You could try the tool recommended in the official installation instructions: https://www.balena.io/etcher/
It's so simple you cannot go wrong with that one. Also check your UEFI does not have boot from USB disabled, it's often found under Security options. You may also have to change the USB controller's mode, some UEFI's expose a number of options there to deal with legacy devices which might be interfering.

Thanks,
Used the Balena tool. UEFI has Security > USB boot enabled.
Should i disable Secure boot, and enable Legacy boot?

Re: Live USB boot UEFI
Disable secure boot but stay in EFI mode, maybe it helps. Otherwise you'll possibly have to go legacy, but I'd try that as a second step. Unless it's an Insyde UEFI, those things are garbage, they won't easily let you dual-boot, either.
Re: Live USB boot UEFI
Thanks. OK I disabled secure boot, and it boots from both EFI and Legacy, but I have to go into Startup menu each time I boot. When I go into Settings (F10 on my computer) set BIOS boot to USB and save, it does not save the setting. F10 > Storage > Boot Order > Legacy Boot Services: USB name > F10 > File >Save Changes and Exit.
Next time I boot I have to go to Startup - Esc > F9 > UEFI: USB name (or Legacy: USB name) > Enter.
I don't understand why it does not save the Boot Order setting. I have checked the BIOS battery and it is ok.
On older computer I can set default BIOS order to any sequence I want, and it saves the settings.

One of the "features" of Insyde... (assuming that's what you got but many HP use it, you can check with this terminal command:
inxi -M
). It locks you to the installed Windows. There's a bunch of workarounds to be found on the forums.Re: Live USB boot UEFI

Re: Live USB boot UEFI
You may have to setup your BIOS Boot Priority to make USB the first priority.
To enter BIOS setup you have to press one of the F keys when the computer boots up.
Which F key depends on the computer (my HP is F10), but if you watch the screen when it starts to boot up it will tell you which key to press.
There may be other BIOS settings to change, but this is the first step.

Re: Live USB boot UEFI
I believe it was an issue with the laptop BIOS or other part of the motherboard. The laptop has now died, and I have buried it!
Thanks for all the helps.

You're welcome, and sorry to hear.
Preferably you edit the first post's subject line with that.
