[SOLVED] Error loading operative system

Post by FinixFighter »

Hi! Today I tried to install Mint 19.1 on my brother's laptop but I had a problem. I tried to install it with an USB (I also used this method with my computer) but I didn't manage to install it because it said "Error loading operative system." The notebook is about 8 years old, an acer aspire 64 bit. I also tried to install LMDE but I had the same problem. Is there some way to fix this?

I suspect that '...error loading operative system...' is a message from the machine's BIOS. Typically, if a machine is told to look at the hard drive first for booting, and it finds a hard drive, the other possible devices are ignored, even if booting from the hard drive fails. Ensure your installer USB is the first place it looks when starting an OS.

Yes, I modifies the BIOS' boot options before the installation, USB is the first choice, HDD is the last.

Is this the exact same USB (and data) you used to install Mint successfully on your computer, or did you "burn" the ISO fresh? If the latter, did you make sure the ISO you downloaded was an exact bit-for-bit copy (by comparing its checksum to what was listed) and, having done so and still had the issue, tried booting to the thing with another computer (perhaps yours, since you know there are no inherent issues with booting to USB with it)?

No, it was a different USB and I didn't make those things :( I'll try to do so and I'll report here any update. Thank you for your hint! :)

Problem solved! The problem was the download mirror. I was always using a german mirror (I choosed from this list https://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=263) but I didn't know it could be a problem. I changed to the Spanish mirror and it worked perfectly (with the same procedure and same usb key).
Thank you all for support! :D

If it was my post that caused you to figure your issue out, I am glad I was able to help. Regardless, I'm happy that you were able to do so. Someone once told me, "If your car won't start, before spending a bunch of money on a tow truck and mechanic... check to see if there's gas in the tank." In other words, check the simple/easy/likely things first, because the problem just might be one of them (and because they're easier  ).

I always use a BitTorrent to get my Mints. Torrent checks the file integrity as part of its normal Collect-Fragments-From-Peers operation.
