Install from Live USB stuck at Mint logo then kernel panic

Post by acalycine »

Trying to install 32bit 19.1 XFCE on an old PC. I've just replaced the RAM with 1.5GB of DDR-500mhz (not much I know) as it was having the same issue before. The USB boots but then goes to the Mint logo on the right, no input works. After about 10 minutes it goes to the kernel panic readout.

You're attempting to install a modern operating system on an old machine so it's not surprising you're having issues. You would be better off to look for a distro geared toward old equipment.

But if it meets the minimum specs it shouldn't have issues installing in theory. Don't believe any boot protection is on the BIOS. What distros would you recommend?

No, that isn't true.

MX linux or perhaps Antix.

I've tried MX 32x (latest) and am getting a kernel panic after it loads to 100%. Probably not the place to seek support for MX but it's likely the same problem with the BIOS or something.

Might be worth making sure the memory bars are firmly seated. Also I hope you have not mixed different memory bars. Memory bars by different producers e.g. In theory they might match, but in real life they often do not.

Antix 17.3, is non-pae and should work fine on old pc's.
https://antixlinux.com/download/

Or, you can try Puppy Linux. Download Puppy iso and run it from a bootable flash drive (save 1st session at shutdown).

Did you call the memory test, e.g. MEMtest 86 5.01 from the mint install menu. press very quickliy alt - F1 at the beginning of install

By the way my machine is also a very old lady, nearly the same construction year, but very spry for her age.
Hope you can fix the kernel panic of your machine! Old must not mean bad.
