Linux Mint 19 sudden graphics failure

Post by Neuron67 » Fri Feb 08, 2019 12:29 am

Hey guys, wondering if a recent update could have caused my graphics drivers to fail.
Used my pc to play a game late last night for a few hours and shutting down didn't work on first attempt.
Today, I went to start it up again and the monitor wouldn't come out of standby.
After a few reboots, and still nothing, I removed the graphics card ( which is a new 1050ti) and switched to internal graphics.
That worked and I ran the pc for about an hour while I checked the logs. I didn't find anything that would indicate a fault so I reinstalled the graphics card and the machine started right up. Did some more hunting and then tried another shutdown but problem returned.

I am not a pro at this but I have been keeping my machines running for many years by doing research and right now I'm finding myself a bit discouraged.
I built this pc about eight years ago and used what I thought was the best components available at the time. Had a drive fail a few years ago and lost everything including the OS. Paid twice more for a new Win 7 OS and got taken so wound up using non-genuine Windows for about 4 years. Then I discovered Linux Mint 19 and here I am. I bought more ram, new graphics card and a new 1TB drive and still can't do the one thing I want to do on this pc; play Minecraft.

Sorry for the rant, just needed to vent a little. I'm just hoping to get someone that can be patient with me even if I sound a little frustrated.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
Ron

I can't get to the terminal.
I posted here to ask if anyone had experienced a similar problem because of a recent update.
