What to choose in installation type for new hdd?

Post by aditya02 »

I have bought a new hdd and going to install linux mint 19.1 xfce as my only os.
My question is what i should choose during installation when asked for installation type (dual boot, encrypt hard drike, something else, etc). I think first option may not be appropriate because i have a new hard drive so it does not required to be formatted as first option does.

If the drive is brand new, then you will be fine just accepting all the default options. Dual Booting is only if you want to install Linux along side another Operating System. Encryption is really only necessary if you have got something worth hiding, otherwise, not necessary for the average user.

Golden rule: when in doubt, trust the defaults. Because they should be, and usually are, reasonable and sensible. So just click OK in every dialog window and you should be fine. :)

Note that there are some advanced and potentially troublesome options in the Mint installer (LVM comes to mind). Don't select one of those.

There is no default option in installation type.

The drive is new and there is nothing in the drive so what is the need to erase it?

No. There should be an option with that text. Use it. It just formats the drive so Mint can use it.

Nobody in the universum can know what you would!

Something else is always good because YOU and only you knows what you would install and only you will know in which partition should what installed and which size each partition should be to hold its planned content.

The very first step is done before the installer gets started:
Which boot method ther installed system should use to boot itself up? The installation medium defines this during its boot up:
- MSDOS , known as compatibility mode
- UEFI, requires partition table type GPT.

Die Bootmethode des Installationsmediums definiert die des installierten Systems. Jedes BIOS treibt da sein eigenes Spielchen.

I would select 'something else' and create a partition for root (/) and a separate partition for /home, root needs to be about 25G and let /home have the rest of the disk. The advantage of separate partitions is that if/when you upgrade in the future, say to LM20.0, you can keep all your existing data in /home and all your configuration files (only the root partition will be overwritten).
