Mint 19.1: "Not Enough Space" on a 30 GB USB Stick

Post by tinker123 »

I'm on a PC with Mint 19 and Cinamon 3.8.9 installed.

I downloaded a Mint 19.1 ISO with the intent of making a bootable USB stick.

I tried to use the simple instructions in the Mint documentation here:

https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... /burn.html

The ISO is 2 GB, the new USB drive is 30 GB.

I got an error message that the stick is not big enough.

I brought it up in Gparted, some "end of file errors" flashed but it told me there was a single 512 KB partition there.

How can I fix this and get where I want to go?

Screen shots attached.

See if you create a new partition table in Gparted will resolve the issue. Go to Device: Create Partition Table: ms-dos.

Didn't work.

GParted threw "end of file" errors and left the USB stick the same.

try http://wiki.rosalab.ru/en/index.php/ROSA_ImageWriter extract it, open the rosa folder, rightclick and open in Terminal type su then drag RosaImageWriter in terminal and hit Enter to open as root
when it's opened be sure your usb stick is selected then hit Clear. theoretically it will destroy the first sectors similar to gparted create partition table. now you can format with whatever

if it doesn't work then your flash drive is either corrupt or read only. was it ever working?

I did not know anything had to be done to a new USB. Could you tell how to this "usb stick formatter" ?

first, plug usb into port on computer when you are in your present linux version.
then, go to your menu and find and open the usb formatter.
under the word format just click on it and your usb should show up.
then, you will see the window on the right side as to how you want it formatted, i always use ext4.
then click on the word format...it will be quite quick.
then go back to the usb stick writer and burn the iso onto it...you should then be good to go...DAMIEN

I formatted it as ext4. When I plugged it back in the label on the disk icon changed to "usb stick".

I got the same errors when trying to move the ISO to it and when I used GParted to read it.

Thanks for the idea. No difference in any of the error messages. Its a new stick, right out of the package this morning.

You can customize your command prompt by putting something like this in your .bashrc file

Code: Select all

# Steve' Customizations
PS1="Mint19Cinnamon3.8.9> "
I did that so I wouldn't have to dig to find out what version of Linux and Cinnamon I have :)

You could try mkusb, installation instructions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/mkusb

I've used it several times for :
  • Restoring a usb stick back to 'normal' after you have screwed it up (option s).
  • Burning an iso to a stick so you can boot from it and have persistence - which is what I think you originally wanted - a stick that would boot and you could write to (option i and then the second screen - it will then ask you how much persistence you want. At some point it complains it will only work on ubuntu, but it works with mint).

Exactly what I was about to suggest. sudo dd if=/path/to/file.iso of=/dev/sdx putting the actual path in instead of /path/to/file.iso and the device identifier (found via Terminal command lsblk, amongst others) being the USB stick. This usually sorts things out, if the stick is genuine & (still) in good order. I've never had it fail. As always, check it's the correct device you're writing to e.g. with lsblk.
