Upgrading from 18.3 to 19.1 - home partition

Post by dan_me »

I am considering upgrading from 18.3 to 19.1, I currently have a separate home partition.

A couple of questions;

1) Can I just do a new install of 19.1 on the root partition and keep my home partition, or is there settings saved on the home partition that will mess up the new install?

If the answer to the first is "yes, keep your home partition", my next question is

2) I am currently running the xfce desktop. If I do the new install but change to cinnamon, is it better to start a fresh home partition? (Again, worried about old settings messing things up)

I hope this makes sense :)

I would backup what most matters to me like my personal data and config/profiles for my browsers, Thunderbird and some other non-desktop-specific apps (like media players etc) and do a clean install of Cinnamon on both root and home.

after you have done that back-up,,
then just run the Installer thus:
- reuse the /root - format
- reuse the /home NoForrnat ( un-check that box )
- reuse the /swap - if there is one.

then click on Next to continue with the Installation - - that's exactly what I've been doing.
