So my friends laptop has a dead hdd (No Media Presense found and disappeared from bios) so is there a way I can have a persistent LiveUSB so he can use it until he gets a new drive. (Only have 1 usb drive and my pc is running linux so linux programs only)

There are a few ways to do that. I prefer mkUSB. Step-by-step here.
