[SOLVED]Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

I just installed the upgrade to kernel 4.4.0-143 and the computer will not boot. After grub, it shows a black screen with the little glowing 5 dots and then it hangs.

I went back to kernel 4.4.0-142 and it boots.

Anybody else having this problem?

I noticed when I booted into this kernel, it didn't see my second monitor but it did boot. Then when I looked at the Nvidia settings, it looked all messed up. I decided not to mess with it and go back to 4.4.0-142 and it worked fine.

On the same day of the kernel update there was a new Nvidia update which I decided to put on ignore since the changelog seemed to indicate only rather minor changes.

I had this kernel update to 4.4.0-143 and a nvidia driver update from 384.130-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 to 16.04.02. I applied the kernel update first and rebooted. The monitor resolution was wrong and cinnamon crashed. I opted not to restart cinnamon and went ahead and installed the nvidia update. After rebooting again, everything is working normally. First time in a long while that I've had a kernel update mess things up, but the nvidia update fixed it.

I really didn't read the above BUT I also had problems with kernel 4.4.0-143 booting up. My problem was I ignored the NVIDIA-340 update because I didn't think I needed it since I run a generic driver for my video. I installed it and now everything is fine

I just ran the Update Manager and clicked on Refresh. It told me that my system is up to date. No Nvidia update is presented. Perhaps the mirror that I am looking at missed the Nvidia update? Seems unlikely, but I have no Nvidia update available.

No, I didn't do anything extra - the nvidia update was presented along with the kernel update. I am surprised that you didn't get the update - it seems you have the same nvidia card that I have.

Can confirm. I went ahead and installed the Nvidia update and restarted. Installed new kernel and restarted. Seems to work fine.

I'm not sure the first restart was necessary but that's how I did it.

Definitely not.
The kernel and the video drivers are provided through the Ubuntu 16.04 repositories, same as for Mint 18.3.
All Mint 18.x releases share precisely the same Ubuntu 16.04 base.

What, exactly does "upgradable" mean? Does that mean that there is an upgrade out there? If so why does it not show up in the Update Manager? I have all 5 levels of upgrades set to "visible".

Is there something I need to do on the CLI to clear this up?

Maybe it has been blacklisted in your Update Manager? Under 18.3 this is under Edit>Preferences>Blacklist, not sure if it's the same in 18.1

Is it possible for the database to simply get out of synch?

What does "upgradable" mean?

It looks like you have level 4 updates turned off. Open your Update Manager click on Edit then Preferences. Under Options, is "Always select Security Updates" checked? Click on the Levels tab. Are both Level 4 boxes checked? If your Update Manager doesn't meet those requirements, you'll get all those upgradable packages listed.

OK. Now I feel really dumb. I have been seeing level 4 and level 5 updates all along, so I assumed that all levels were set to visible. But level 4 and 5 levels were not checked visible. I guess the ones I was seeing were visible because both Show Security Updates and Show Kernel Updates were checked.

I have now checked both level 4 and 5 as visible, and the updates now appear in the Update Manager.... including the missing Nvidia update.

I am now going to install all of the updates and reboot with fingers crossed.

If I don't come back..... I have probably fat-fingered another setting somewhere.

UPDATE: I installed all the updates. I rebooted. It all works again. Thanks to all for your infinite patience and help.

It was Nivida 340. AND I take back that I'm not using it because I am? I use to use the generic driver but now it appears I'm stuck with the Nivida driver.

I have found that the nouveau driver is very glitchy on my systems. I always start out giving up on getting the Nvidia drivers to work and go with the open source driver, and then after dealing with the glitchy graphics for a while I cave in and set up the Nvidia drivers.

Then.... I give up on Nvidia entirely and look into other graphics cards... but after reading the reviews of the other cards on Linux.... I go back to Nvidia.. which at least seems to work after I get through the fiasco of setting it up.... and once again I have come full circle back to setting up the Nvidia cards.

So I think that "stuck" is the word of the day. Right now my system is working so I am not going to change anything.

The 340 driver shows up in my list of available drivers in the Software Manager. I am running Mint 18.1. What list are you looking at where the driver does not appear?

I just went to the nvidia web site to search for the driver for the GTX 960, and it recommends the 390 driver, which does not appear in my list of available drivers, and the 384 driver, which does appear.

I did a manual search for the GTX 960.
