'error no symbol table' [SOLVED]
The past two days I got this message during boot on my old Gateway with 7 MG RAM running Mate 19.1.

It's supposedly grub that's complaining. Seeing as how you find your system to be "old" I suppose it's using MBR partitioning? Grub installed on /dev/sda? If so, try reinstalling it with

Yes, there are GBs of RAM which suddenly appeared right after my first cup of coffee!
The Gateway SX2380 is younger than I am, only about 8 years old, about 9% of my antiquity.
Here's the message after trying to reinstall GRUB: 'grub-install: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda.. Check your device.map' probably because GRUB is on sdb, the SSD: I'll try again with caffeine assist.
I've now had a second cup, then commended 'sudo grub-install /dev/sdb' and anticipate further good advice.
