Be smart and do a clean installation of 19.1. Safer, technically better and even quicker.

In-place upgrades are only recommendable within a particular Mint series (e.g. the 19 series).

Agreed.
Upgrading from Mint 18.3 to Mint 19 in-place using mintupgrade is an adventure.
The more so, because most users, who try the in-place upgrade, either do not read the pre-requisite C1. Experience with APT and the command line or ignore it or both. [1]

It's worked flawlessly for me several times, it's worked flawlessly for many people here. You should not be too quick to assume that your problem is universal. If it were, wouldn't it be all over these forums? I do, however, hope you find a fix soon!

Not many users would take the time to report any errors. When seeing such an error most users would simply go back to the distro they know and that works for them, not bothering to report anything at all.
If the problem were local, then pls explain this to me:
• how come installing 18.3 doesn't bring such errors?
• how come installing 19.0 doesn't bring such errors?
• what about the matching sha256? If the problem were caused by an unfinished download of the ISO, then the checksum wouldn't match.

Feel free to answer in my topic instead of here.

For me, too. Absolutely fine, no problems at all. Many times.

I must disagree. Users frequently report errors they get when trying to install Mint, install software, and do other things. The forum is full of all kinds of reported errors and problems.

Anyway, your problem and this branch of the discussion are both off topic here, so I'll leave it be.

Because 17.3 had reached end-of-life, I decided to upgrade via the following procedure:

https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2316

I can only speak for myself when saying that everything went flawless on my 11 years (!) old system.
Minor point is that it took approx. one hour for the upgrade to finish. I was glad to see that all user
programs and settings were intact and untouched. However, I guess the upgrade did not like Grub
Optimizer, because that program was removed, lol...

Hendrick, you are a very lucky guy - it is true the upgrade from one version to the next done in place has worked for a few people. But mostly it is a disaster. The upgrades within a version seem to go flawlessly. Horror stories of upgrades between versions going bad are way more prevalent than the success stories such as yours.

I tried upgrades in place a few times when I first started with Mint and never had any success. It was an exorcise in frustration and a colossal waste of time - and in the end I still had to do a fresh install.

WEll, thanks for all these posts. I think I'll go with the "if it's not broke don't try & fix it advice" All worked well on my HP laptop (from which I'd deleted Win10), but I'll leave the desktop machine as is as 18.3 is working well.

Hi - so I use 18.1 Mint and am considering moving to 19 to have the latest version. What is the process to do the fresh install? Do I delete the old version and install the new? Does anyone have a procedure they would share? Thanks.

Jon
Thanks!

Jon, you should start a thread of your own rather than imposing on this thread.
