Unable to install 19.2 due to login loop. [SOLVED]

Post by Jusaus » Mon Sep 09, 2019 1:54 am

Hello everyone,

I've been using different debian-based linux distros for 5 years now, including Mint from 15 something, Deepin and Ubuntu. I can search quite well to troubleshoot myself, but it means someone had to have the same problem before me. So far I've found solutions for every problem I've had before, but I came to a full stop with this one:

Trying to install LM 19.2 trough live USB, but I cannot even login to start install as it loops right back in to login screen after submitting blank PW for user mint. I can login to another session using ctrl+alt+f2-f7 and same credentials. I just don't know what to do from there to continue install.

PC I'm trying to install 19.2:

Running problem free Cinnamon 18.3 64-bit on Samsung 830 SSD, dual booting W10 from another Samsung SSD.

Here's what I've already tried:

Making bootable USB from both windows 10 and LM 18.3, using Rufus/Mint default USB tool/Etcher. Both UEFI and Legacy mode have been tested.
I've tried 2 different USB sticks Sony 16GB and Samsung 32GB, both USB 3 and both have been used to install various OS's (LM 17/18, W10, Ubuntu Desktop and Server and lastly Deepin. USB Sticks are working without errors, installation media correctly thinks it's LM 19.2 installation and integrity checks. MB also has USB 2.0 ports which have been tested. Problem is always the same, everything goes without a hick untill I have to login.

Also tried downloading the .iso file several times to 3 different computers to be sure. W10, deepin and LM 18.3. I've checked the integrity of installation medias, checked checksums of downloaded files.

Lots of things tried, probably forgot some.

EDIT: added inxi info

Hey Jusaus, welcome to the Linux Mint Forums! And kudos for an exceptionally well done first post.

Let's start with, you shouldn't be getting a login screen for a live session. As you have (for all practical purposes) eliminated download and burn error, that leaves a hardware compatibility issue. FWIW, this came up recently in another thread, though different hardware (UEFI rather than BIOS). Anyhoo, let's try what worked there. First, boot with nomodeset. The Release Notes explain how to do this if you don't already know. Possible that will turn the trick, as you have an NVIDIA card. If that doesn't work, try booting the live session in Compatibility Mode and see whether that will let you install.

Thank you for your reply and kudos!

I was quite sure I forgot something, I did try to install with Compatibility Mode but in vain, it ended up in same loop.
Going for the possible solution now.

Nomodeset was the solution here too. Compatibility mode couldn't boot at all, just hanged after a while, but with nomodeset in normal boot everything worked fine.
