Haywire software updates with Linux Mint Mate 19.2

Post by awkwardhelicopter » Tue Sep 10, 2019 10:29 am

Hi all -- I wonder if you could help me resolve what I think is a haywire installation of Linux Mint Mate 19.2. For some reason the only firefox I can install is version 64, yet I have firefox 69 installed on my work computer that runs 19.2.

Here is output from an inxi command:

Code: Select all

System: Host: aspire Kernel: 4.15.0-62-generic x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: MATE 1.22.0 Distro: Linux Mint 19.2 Tina
Repos: No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list
           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/locale.list
           1: deb http://live.linuxmint.com tessa main
           2: deb-src http://live.linuxmint.com tessa main
           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
1: deb http://packages.linuxmint.com tina main upstream import backport
2: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic main restricted universe multiverse
3: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates main restricted universe multiverse
4: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-backports main restricted universe multiverse
5: deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ bionic-security main restricted universe multiverse
           6: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ bionic partner
Getting software updates has become pretty flaky generally. I have no idea what what wrong and why.

Thank you!

Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/locale.list
1: deb http://live.linuxmint.com tessa main
2: deb-src http://live.linuxmint.com tessa main
I believe both of these should read: http://live.linuxmint.com tina main

It's not that bad, but the Tessa repo must be removed for it takes precedence, so this is basically a 19.2 potentially downgraded to 19.1, haha (I won't even ask why OP did that):

Code: Select all

sudo rm -v /etc/apt/sources.list.d/locale.list

What's up with the instructions under #3? You should never edit the official repository lists manually for mintsources will overwrite them. If you want to add the Google repo then add it as an Additional Repository, but you'd need to add the signing key, too. If you somehow managed to corrupt the file by manually editing it then you can just delete it, mintsources will recreate it next time you start it.

That's just an emergency measure, in case the official recommended way of restoring the sources list (mentioned at #1 and #2) fails...

Thanks Pjotr! You helped me fix my system, thank you.

Your instructions were very helpful. They had me uncheck two Tessa items (additional PPAs I think, I'm not at my Linux system ATM).

By the way, I absolutely did not do anything weird to get into whatever broken state I was in. A few days ago I simply used the upgrade feature in the software updates tool to upgrade from 19.1 to 19.2.

Well, yes, and that was exactly the problem, for you also had added to priority repositories for LM 19.1 (the live.linuxmint.com ones) so the 19.2 upgrade could not actually install everything and you ended up with a part 19.1, part 19.2 system. I don't know why you had added those but you should never do that, those repository addresses are not meant to be used.
