HELP!!! Black screen after updating Linux Mint

Post by LinuxUser1000 » Sun Sep 15, 2019 2:18 pm

I updated Linux mint (running 19.2) and after doing so now I can't boot, I get either a black screen, or it hangs when loading the initial ramdisk.

If I add the option apci=off, it will boot, but my touch pad doesn't work, so I have no mouse.

Here is my output from lsapi (I'm using an Asus VivoBook):
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Device 3e34 (rev 0b)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 3ea0

02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78)

Is there any way to get this to boot and have the touchpad working?

Code: Select all

00:17.0 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile SATA Controller [RAID mode] (rev 30)
Is this running in a RAID mode? I know Lenovo Yoga and "Signature Edition" of Windows do, and they are difficult to get Linux installed on them. Lenovo had to offer specific Linux capable BIOS for that after the 2016 stink over it.

Post results of this run in terminal.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxi

Its not "raid" but I enabled encryption when I installed Linux Mint. What's weird is it worked perfectly fine after installing the OS, there wasn't a problem until I ran all updated, and not it won't even boot ok with the old kernel????

Here are the results of that command:

What's also weird is I after I hold down the power button for 5 seconds, and boot again, then repeat that, it will usually boot no problem, mouse will work, full graphics resolution, etc. Then if I reboot, it will freeze again. This makes no sense....

I changed the bios from Intel RST to ahci, which seems to have made the RAID message go away, but I'm still experiencing the same problem. Here is the new output from your command:

I think it's in RAID setting, so hope someone else comes along to help on that. You might change in BIOS and then not be able to boot windows or other system on it. Or if RAID is the default, then maybe this happened because your motherboard's coin battery has failed to keep the settings in BIOS.

It's nice it has that option, unlike Lenovo who had to offer an alternate bios to flash on theirs.

We could probably assume the Mint was installed originally in AHCI mode.

Still, I'm a bit leery of messing with it. What I can offer is grub repair method that might solve the problem.
