Dual boot 64 bit Kali Large and Linux Mint MATE - installation strategy?

Post by Minux1 » Sun Sep 15, 2019 7:55 pm

I have made USB boot disks (using Rufus on a 64 bit W10 Pro laptop) for 64 bit Linux Mint v19.2 MATE and Kali Linux Large v2019.3 amd.64.
Downloaded the .ISOs from the respective O/S authors websites.
I am starting with a 1.65 GHz dual core 64 bit capable laptop with a brand new pristine 1TB SSD and 8 GB RAM ... in other words a well resourced computer.
I want to dual boot Kali and LM v19.2 MATE.
I don't care if the system uses the Kali GRUB or the LM GRUB as long as the booting and O/S selection process is smooth and simple.
There are experts on this forum who have done this before and know all the snags and pitfalls.
I'm a firm believer in the paradigm that the best way to fix a mistake is not make it in the first place.
So I'm not going to blind rush this project.
What is my installation strategy?

I did learn one thing and that is there is no point trying to make boot USB drives for 64 bit O/Ss with a 32 bit only computer.
Tried with Disk Image Writer and Gparted on a laptop running LM XFCE 32 bit ... total flatline.
Took a bit over 1/2 hr inclusive of downloading time to make 3 boot drives ... Kali, LM (MATE & CINNAMON) with Rufus and Mini Tool Partition Wizard on a laptop running 64 bit Win 10 Pro without a single ripple on the pond.
I´ve had 3 successful Linux installs ... time to get serious and kick the training wheels off.

Please post an inxi -Fxz report for the machine you are installing to. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and on how Mint sees it.

Here is how to generate the report and post it:

Boot from your installation media (USB/DVD)
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Execute the command

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxzd
exactly as it has been typed here.

Mark the complete text output which the command will display with your mouse.
Press the keyboard shortcut <Shift><Ctrl>C to copy the marked text into the clipboard.
Enclose the results between the code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply then paste <Ctrl>V them in your reply between the code markers.

The results will help us to help you.

Wound up installing LM Cinnamon 64 bit v19.2 on the subject laptop.
Apparently beginners luck is still holding out ... it went off without a hitch.
Booted into the USB boot drive and the big Sesame Street Simple INSTALL button appeared on the screen.
I pressed the big button and the rest was as easy as falling off a log.
Time for a reality check.
I have a lot to learn before I’ll be dual booting and needing Linux specialist tools like Kali.
Very impressed with Cinnamon.
