Problem with installation of Linux Mint 19.2 Cinamon (64bit) [SOLVED]

Post by Manosman »

Hi there, :D

I'm actually completely new to Linux. I come from Windows 10 (which is kind of bad...) and I actually heard that Linux Mint is simple and really amazing to start with. I actually don't know any coding though, but I'll try to manage! :D

So, I downloaded the .iso file from the Linux Mint website and I made a bootable USB and tried to instal the OS, however, once I chose the USB from the boot menu, I got this: "No default or ui configuration directive found".

I tried to use a FAT and a FAT32 format, I also redownloaded the .iso file, just to make sure and I also used both Rufus and UUI. And since I saw it online, I also tried to rename the names of some files, in order for the system to read it properly. Well, nothing worked actually... So, any ideas? :)

I made a hasty post and then did some looking. Now I confess to not knowing the answer. I'm sure some of the big guns here will drop by to help.

I also tried to rename the names of some files
Curious re that.
You should download a Mint .iso file and burn it as is---as an image
No renaming needed.
Are you extracting the files?? Don't do that.
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.

When all else fails, maybe try reading the manual?

Are you trying to install to a bare drive or is this some virtual box setup?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies!

I'll make sure to try it the way that manual suggests.

I actually am trying to install Linux Mint on my HDD, I just use the USB to boot from it.

As for the .iso file, I only did what the instructions told me (Download the .iso, use Rufus (or any other software suggested) and boot from the USB).

Rufus is fine. In fact, I prefer it in Windows for burning ISOs to USB. Mainly, I was referring you to the manual for the other stuff, in particular how to prepare your machine for installation. For example, Windows has a feature called Fast Startup which places the hard drive in a hibernation state. Mint can't install to a hibernated drive. You disable Fast Startup in Control Panel (under Power Options > Power Button).

By the way, is this going to be dual boot or Mint only? If the former, see also ELTP (the website of long time forum member Pjotr).

I already had "Fast Startup" off. Also, I use dual boot.

Well, I actually solved the problem, I just burned the .iso to a dvd and then I installed Linux Mint like that. All went well.

I only have one last question before I mark this as "SOLVED". When I restarted my pc, it booted me directly to Windows 10, without asking. How do I go to Lunux Mint? Do I have to change something in the BIOS?

Did you disable secure boot in UEFI? That will prevent Mint boot loader to initiate. If that still does not work, boot into Mint live DVD/USB again and run below command in Terminal (ctrl+alt+t) to output machine information and post result between </> sign (at top of reply box). Certain UEFI implementation requires additional steps to boot Mint.

Code: Select all

I actually haven't done that. I'll try it!

EDIT: Safe Boot was already disabled. So, that's not it.

Output shows Mint live DVD booted in legacy BIOS mode. For a Win10/Mint dual boot, firmware should be in UEFI mode. Wondering if Mint was installed in legacy mode also. Is the firmware set to legacy BIOS, UEFI or UEFI with CSM?

Output also shows 2 drives (2TB and 1TB), please run below command in Terminal to output partition information for the drives. There may be EFI partition on both drives causing this issue.

Code: Select all

sudo parted -l

Machine has 2 MBR drives with no EFI partition and a boot flagged partition on each drive, which is not typical for Win10 installation. Looks like a Win10 boot partition is on /dev/sda1 and Mint is installed on /dev/sdb5. Is this a Win10 upgraded from Win7?

Link to manual for Asrock AB350M Pro4, BIOS setup starts @pp48: http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/Man ... 20Pro4.pdf
Asrock AB350M Pro4 supports UEFI with CSM, which is also the default settings. Please confirms that SATA is set to AHCI (pp 56). If SATA is in RAID mode, changing to AHCI will break the Win10 installation, please let us know if this is the case. If not, I would try changing boot order (pp 64) to boot from the 1TB HDD first and see if you can boot into GRUB.

I actually installed Windows 10 from my university. They give free software and stuff to all students of the university.

How can I confirm that SATA is set to AHCI? I've attached an image from Device Manager, I hope that works.

Did you setup Win10 or was it done by a tech at the university? First time that I have seen Win10 installed on MBR drive with UEFI capable machine.

The settings (SATA, secure boot, fast boot, CSM and boot menu) that I am talking about are in BIOS setup. During boot, tap f2 or Delete key repeatedly to bring up UEFI setup utility screen, tap f11 repeatedly to bring up boot menu.
SATA AHCI: Use the arrow key to navigate to Advanced tab to open Advanced screen, use arrow key to navigate to Storage Configuration and press Enter key to open Advanced Storage Configuration screen, SATA mode line should be "AHCI".
Secure boot disabled: Use the arrow key to navigate to Security tab to open Security screen, check that Secure Boot State is "Disabled".
Fast boot, CSM: Use the arrow key to navigate to boot tab to open Security screen, check that Fast Boot is "Disabled". Check that CSM is "Enabled".
Use arrow key to navigate to Exit tab to open Exit menu. To exit and save changes, use arrow key to highlight Save Changes and Exit and press Enter to exit. To exit without saving changes, use arrow key to highlight Discard Changes and Exit and press Enter to exit

Please let us know if SATA, secure boot, fast boot and CSM settings.

I installed Windows 10 personally.

As for the settings you told me, things were already like that. So, I didn't have to change anything.

OK, with all the UEFI settings as they should be. Reboot and tap f11 while booting, this will bring up the boot menu. Boot menu should have both HDD listed, use the arrow key to select the 1TB HDD and press Enter and see if this bring up the GRUB menu and boot Mint.

It actually worked! :D
However, how can I make it boot from that disk without using the BIOS?

Also, I noticed that my pictures, documents, etc. don't exist on Linux Mint. Is there a way to move them?

OK, looks like the Mint installation is good, Mint was just set to boot after Win10. Can you see Windows boot manager as an option in the GRUB menu listing?

As far as permanently moving the Mint HDD ahead of Win10 HDD, there should be a setting in the Boot section of UEFI that shows both Win10 boot manager and Mint boot loader. Any changes made there would be permanent. I cannot find where this would be reading through the manual. Expand each item inside of the Boot section and see if you can find it. As long as you don't save the changes in UEFI, looking around would not cause any change.

Are you talking about the data that was on Win10? Open a file manager and you will see the Win10 partition listed under Devices. Click on the device to mount the partition and you can access the data. Before you do this, make sure that Win10 fast startup is disabled, otherwise you could corrupt the Win10 partition. If you have not backup your data, boot into Win10 and backup your data before doing anything else.
