Desktop Freeze and Locks Up

Post by kelltech » Tue Sep 17, 2019 5:00 pm

Well I was very excited after 2 years to finally give my Windows partition the boot and when I had to replace my drive I did just that with a fresh install of LM 19.

But now I have trouble. After the fresh install, I had a black screen until I finally got the Nvidia driver selected. Since then, my screen randomly freezes. Full lock up, nothing I can do except force a power off and boot again. This has happened a dozen times in the 2 hours since I've been up and running.

I feel like I went from bad to worse and have rendered my laptop useless at this moment. :(

I have everything installed to a 256gb ssd and home is on a 1tb hdd. I've not had a problem like this in the 2 years I've been using LM daily. Should I wipe once again and start over, or might there be a way to see if this issue will follow me into another clean install?

Please post an inxi -Fxz report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and on how Mint sees it.

Here is how to generate the report and post it:

Boot from your installation media (USB/DVD)
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Execute the command

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxzd
exactly as it has been typed here.

Mark the complete text output which the command will display with your mouse.
Press the keyboard shortcut <Shift><Ctrl>C to copy the marked text into the clipboard.
Enclose the results between the code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply then paste <Ctrl>V them in your reply between the code markers.

The results will help us to help you.

Thanks Larry. In my frustration and it being so late last night I forgot this important step.
Something I noticed is my nice, new Western Digital Black HDD is actually a Hitachi HGST. Looks like I need a word with Amazon...

The inxi would not work when booted from USB, I had to log into my installed version to run the code:

Try this:

1. Upgrade your kernel:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel of the 5.0 series. Then reboot.

2. When no avail, turn off all visual effects:

(item 5.1)

3. When still no avail, reduce the maximum c-state:

(item 25)

Edit: I can't install anything from update manager, it keeps going unresponsive and I have to force quit update manager. :(

Just curious, when turning off visual effects, would I then be leaving then off from here on?

If this workaround helps: yes.

I really do appreciate your help, but quite honestly I don't have a $1200 laptop sitting in front of me to run things in basic mode. I've been using LM exclusively for years, 2 years just on this laptop and have never had to dial my system down in order to use it.

I can't install the 5 kernel or anything from update manager, it keeps going unresponsive and I have to force quit update manager. I'm going to download LM again, verify, create a new USB and start over. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Well I finally got the kernel installed and it did last a bit longer, but finally locked up again. That's it for tonight... I'm out of ideas and energy!

Not so long ago that laptop might well have cost $1200+ .

Try going into Terminal and copy/paste:

Code: Select all

apt update
Then see if you can do what Pjotr suggests.
Really - stick with it. Its worth it. :D
