Installing New Versions of Mint ( SOLVED )

Postby bruggen » Sat Aug 01, 2009 8:37 am

Hi there,
I am fairly new to linux so bear with me please.

I have Mint Gloria installed on its own, seperate, partition, ( XP on the other partition ).

Everything is working fine and I am very happy with the present set up.

My question concerns future upgrades to the Mint installation. When a new Mint system is released can I simply burn the new system to disk and then install OVER the existing Gloria system or would I need to clear the existing Gloria installation and perform a clean Install?

Thanks for any help.

Hello bruggen, and Welcome to Linux Mint. A fresh install is always recommended, as it's really easy if you have your data on a separate partition (see the how-to section). However if you wish to do an in-place upgrade, then you currently install a special "upgrader" package that does its best, there isn't an "upgrade from disc" option like you described. See the blog's ugrade instructions for felicia > gloria as an example.

Hint - use a google search including the search term site:forums.linuxmint.com

Thanks for your quick response.

I am extremely happy with Mint, so much so that I am giving very serious consideration to having it as my main OS with XP relegated to VirtualBox.
