Grub2 information & Links.
As emorrp1 pointed out to me the other day, grub2 is coming. It will mean a number of changes in the way grub booting will be managed.
I'll be the first to tell you that I know next to nothing about grub2. I have been doing some reading about it but that is a long way from having a strong working knowledge of grub2.
The first thing that I noticed that seems to be missing is the ability to use unique identifiers in the "root" line. We seem to still be stuck with the "hd0,1" drive/partition identifier. In my opinion this was one of the biggest improvements needed in this day of mixed storage devices. I hope I am wrong on this issue, and just missed something.
At any rate, what I would like to suggest is a list of links to grub2 information/documentation that we all can use as a knowledge base for grub2. Good documentation on grub2 seems hard to find at the moment, so we would all benefit from assembling what we can in one list. emorrp1 gave me the first link below and I am adding another. If you find something you think is worth posting about grub2 please put it in this thread and I will put it in the list. That way it can all be kept together and easy to access.
Thanks,
Fred

- (hd0,0)
-Grub1 (legacy grub) - (hd0,1)
-grub 2
This has been looming for awhile, every since Grub2 was announced, and grub legacy was the new name for the older Grub..
Grub2
- using a splashscreen..
http://blogs.koolwal.net/2008/12/16/how ... sh-images/ - Multiboot (dual-boot)
--windows XP
http://blogs.koolwal.net/2008/12/28/win ... r-grub-pc/
- Edit grub.cfg or other method..

8. mike_s - 18 May, 2009 well I just got grub2 up and running on my triple boot system. I have ubuntu 9.1, Windows Vista, and a version of OSX using chameleon’s darwin bootloader. Although I agree that grub2 is way more complicated than its legacy, it is definately doable. The people who are telling you to edit the grub.cfg file are full of beans, as a mismatch between the executables in /etc/grub.d and the .cfg seems to royally piss off grub2. you should edit the exe’s in ~/grub.d to make changes and then execute the command: sudo /usr/sbin/update-grub to make those changes flow through into the grub.cfg ... oh also grub2 doesn’t understand uuid’s so while you are in between you should make sure to edit the menu.ls used by legacy grub to change all uuid’s (except where it says uuid=root) to the respective device and partition or else you will get an error 11 unrecognized device. good luck
grub.cfg gets updated with each update-grub
- For a permanent modification of grub.cfg, you must create a script in /etc/grub.d/
-- script goes into in /etc/grub.d or /etc/default/grub
--with some additional menu command names like menuentry
- grub 2
{
command 1
command 2
...
} - grub1
command 1
command 2
...

Here are a couple of additional links:
http://linuxhub.net/2009/07/install-gru ... jackalope/
http://grub.enbug.org/
The second is to the first page of the Grub 2 Wiki. All kinds of neat links there.
EDIT
Got another:
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/
This is the Gnu site for Grub . All the latest info will be linked from here and there is a Grub 2 download if you want to play around with the beta version to gain some familiarity. (I will be doing this asap)

Thanks for organizing this, Fred.
Over time, I will go through these links and read about GRUB 2.
Then I can pretend to understand it.

Reliable? In what way?Gumbotron wrote:is this site reliable anyway?
I've accessed Softpedia for the past couple of years, mainly for Windows utilities, when necessary.
My Linux programs come mainly from the native installer.
No embedded advertising and a reasonable database makes it "OK", in my book.
I haven't paid much attention to their articles. User comments are typical.
