unable to log on as regular user

Postby franklikespolitics » Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:53 pm

I reinstalled my system with dual boot debian and LinuxMint. LinuxMint on top of Debian, or instaled last. At setup I set frank as username. When I enter that name and the password I used at setup, it does not reject it but just starts and freezes with just a blank screen. I have to use hardware on button to turn it off. When I turn back on and type root and my install password I get logged on. I tried typing incorrect username]s and passwords and system does reject them. I tried re installing an it is doing the same thing. On single install I did not have this problem. Frank

I don't understand what a single install means here ?,
--which one Debian version ? or Mint version ?

Anyway a way to test the login.
  • alt F1
  • sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
  • login with your user name (Frank ?)
    --does that work
  • sudo /etc.init.d/gdm start
--does that work, do you get the desktop
It might be helpful to see the contents of your /boot/grub/menu.1st file
--it may also be important to know which version of grub is being used on the debian install and on the Mint install

In terminal, check
--for Linux Mint 7 -gloria 32 bit version
    grub --version
    grub (GNU GRUB 0.97)
    apt search grub
p grub - GRand Unified Bootloader
    i grub-common - GRand Unified Bootloader, version 2 (commo
    apt show grub-common
    Package: grub-common
    State: installed
    Automatically installed: no
    Version: 1.96+20080724-12ubuntu2
    --more detail

http://reddevil62-techhead.blogspot.com ... -boot.html
This may also help with the grub setup needed by Debian..
