Issues Reading External Drive on Boot

Postby RexM » Sun Aug 16, 2009 2:38 am

When I boot my machine, everything seems to go fine, but then I start getting boot errors, which I'll paste below. This all started after one day when I hit shut down and left for work, apparently the desktop did not completely shut down. I came home from work and it was still on, I hit the button in the front and just did a hard shut down.

One of the external drives is no longer mounted automatically when I turn my system on and the icon isn't showing up on the desktop.

I don't know how much of this log is useful, but I'll try to get what I think might be useful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It currently takes my machine about 3 minutes to boot up, now, because of all of these extra errors.

Boot without the external drive attached. When you have a ready desktop, insert the drive into the USB port. After a few seconds open a terminal and type:

fdisk -l
df -h

and show us the results (so we can determine if there is still a valid partition table on the drive).

I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it put an icon on my desktop. Everything seems to be there, as well.

Code: Select all

rexm@rexm-desktop ~ $ fdisk -l
rexm@rexm-desktop ~ $ df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1             283G  4.6G  264G   2% /
tmpfs                 2.0G     0  2.0G   0% /lib/init/rw
varrun                2.0G  288K  2.0G   1% /var/run
varlock               2.0G     0  2.0G   0% /var/lock
udev                  2.0G  180K  2.0G   1% /dev
tmpfs                 2.0G   76K  2.0G   1% /dev/shm
lrm                   2.0G  2.7M  2.0G   1% /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/volatile
/dev/sdb2             280G  239G   41G  86% /media/Maeby
/dev/sdg1             699G  688G   11G  99% /media/Gob

I'm going to try and restart quickly to see if everything is fixed, will post back in a minute.

EDIT: Yes, I just restarted and it boots up normal. Who would have thought I just needed to unplug it and plug it back in... Thanks for the help :)
