Linux live usb doesn't detect HDD on laptop Acer Aspire 3 a315-56

Post by Ishmael »

Hi everyone. Please, help me!
I try to install Linux Mint x64 19.3 xfce-edition on my laptop Aspire 3 a315-56 (this laptop comes without installed OS). I disabled secure boot and fast boot from BIOS. I also switched "sata mode" to "ahci". Live usb starts and works normally, but it is not possible to install OS, because Linux doesn't detect hard drive. I tried different linux distributions: Ubuntu, Debian, Manjaro, Fedora, CentOS and I had the same problem.

Live usb with windows 10 recognised HDD normally.

Here is inxi output:

sudo parted -l
It gives this

Linux says it is 512 bytes.

From this post:
https://community.acer.com/en/discussio ... -3-a315-56
I see a laptop that it is preconfigured to accept only one OS, Windows. So the only option I can think, is to reformat the HDD with the windows tool to vfat for example and to try again.
Or you bring it back if the advertisement said without OS, which the correct phrase is, without Windows.
From the forum of Acer I can see that Acer is not Linux friendly, so far away from it.

I have seen this with an USB HDD too but do not remember exactly anymore how I got it working.......
Does it somewhere show up in the Terminal with the command: sudo lshw ?
Did you already check with Menu > Disks and see if the HDD shows up there?
You can run this app from DVD testing the PC even before installing Mint.
Often disks that are not mounted are not displayed in Linux OS.
If it does I would use the 2 wheels button to go deeper in the system settings without using the Terminal.
I also read that Windows ntfs and fat formatting sometimes causes opening/showing problems.
And another trick I once used in the passed was to change the ownership of the folders in Windows.

Did you purchase the laptop brand new or second hand?
Brand new they all come with windows 10 home or pro installed. If you bought it second hand, did you see it running with windows installed?
Is the HD showing in your bios?
Boot into your live mint usb and in terminal enter the following command and post the results back here..
inxi -Fzx

kato, there's an inxi report in the OP.

Note also that asinoro's first link above is our OP's thread at Acer forum.

Yer I saw that mate, but my one was incomplete that's why I asked for another one. I have an acer aspire laptop with ssd and hdd and never had a problem installing mint on it. I just can't fathom if he purchased the laptop brand new why it never came with windows 10 installed on it. It should have been.
It's just like buying a car without an engine in it. Try before you buy.

I have been reading up on this problem and have had some success..Have you done the following?
1. Is the HDD showing in your bios.
2. Selected your boot device
3. Selected boot order eg 1st boot: USB 2nd Boot: HDD
If the computer came with no O/S installed then the HDD hasn't been prepared.
4. Install windows on the laptop, then when that is done then boot into your live usb and go to menu = disks and check to see if the drive is present now.
Do you only have one HDD in the laptop?

Thanks everybody for your replies! I tried everything that you advised but nothing helped

I guess that the matter is in the motherboard. Linux just doesn't support its sata controller for hdd, therefore it is just impossible to install Linux (not only mint) on this laptop. My problem doesn't have solution. So, I installed windows and use Linux Mint on virtual box.

I think, the problem is that linux (any linux, not only Mint) doesn't support HDD controller used in my laptop... Do exist some way to contact with developers and ask them to add support of this hardware? I really want to use linux (and Mint is my favorite distro!) on my laptop but i lost last hope for this when i tried to install Linux Mint Ulyana... This distro still can't detect HDD
