Install Mint 19.3 Grub Theme in Mint 18.3?

Post by Malik »

Good day,

I have recently tried installing and using Mint 19.3 on my old Thinkpad X230 laptop, and found the GRUB loader screen theme to be very nice, clean and neat (though I might change the wallpaper).

Unfortunately some things I use are broken in 19.3 in this system, like fingerprint-gui, certain repos and apps, etc. I reverted back (reinstalled) 18.3 and everything is okay, but do miss the 19.3's grub theme.

Is there any way of installing that theme on 18.3?

Thank you.

Not sure if 18.3 has all needed support, but no harm in trying it, I suppose. Copy the /boot/grub/themes/linuxmint directory and its contents from 19.3 and the line to be inserted into /boot/grub/grub.cfg (just after "insmod png") would be:

Code: Select all

set theme=($root)/boot/grub/themes/linuxmint/theme.txt
You'd also need to edit /etc/default/grub.d/60_mint-theme.cfg to make the change survive update-grub.
System: Asus ROG Maximus XI Code mobo, Intel i9-9900K CPU, Nvidia GTX1080 GPU, 32 GB DDR4-3600 RAM, Sumsung Pro 2x512GB NVMe & 3x1TB SSD, Multiboot

I am unable to search for the "insmod png" texts. Where shall I place the "set theme=($root)/boot/grub/themes/linuxmint/theme.txt"?

I don't have the 60_mint-theme.cfg file in that location. (Only 50_linuxmint.cfg file.) Should I create it, and if so, what will be the contents in it?

Thanks.

Sorry, but I haven't the foggiest notion where you'd put it in that case. If it doesn't load "inmod png" it won't support that theme using a background.png image anyhow.

Oh, I see. It's alright then. Thanks for your prompt help! :)
