Easiest way to install anything is to search in the Software Manager first & install from there if it's available.

If not - is there a .deb file in what you downloaded? If so double click that & it will install.

Click on "Menu" with your mouse, immediately start typing "Software Manager" on your keyboard, without the quotation " marks. Automatically the program "Software Manager" will appear. Select it.

Software Manager will open. In the upper right corner, enter the software program you are looking for in the search bar. A list of similarly named programs will appear. Select the correctly named software program and simply press on the "Install" button. That's all... You can simply remove earlier installed software in this program as well.

May I ask (out of curiosity) what program you were looking for?

Yes, especially for newcomers like yourself I would advise you to only use the Software Manager at first. Learn your way around by getting to know the LinuxMint OS a bit. You seem to be completely new to Linux, so it's best to first get acquainted with the all the new LinuxMint vocabulary. It took me some time as well to get to know everything... Welcome to the forum gumsriddleing!

By the way: updates are installed via the Update Manager, but you will be automatically alerted about those in the panel / taskbar, when there are new updates available.

Yes. To find, download and install software. And to uninstall it.

For the moment, and even once you have been using Mint for some time, you need to forget about your old Windows ways of searching for applications on the internet; that's not where you will get 99.9% of what applications you install - they will all come from the repositories of the Mint OS using Software Manager, or if you prefer, synaptic, Mint's package manager.

a lot of sites now can track what operating system you are running to give you by algarythams the right program to download
But having a directory sound much more organized. I guess driver hunting is a windows things where as linux have done it all for you
