Can't boot when not plugged into AC power

Post by rthwm »

I am completely new to using Linux and have been experimenting with this for a couple days now. I am a little confused though and not sure how to fix this.
I have a HP laptop (model: 15-cw1068wm). If this laptop isn't plugged into power on boot, it makes it past the GRUB loader but goes to a black screen and just sits there. I have to hold down the power button and do a force shut-down each time. However, if I plug in the AC power, it boots and everything seems to work. I believe I am running Mint 20.

I am not sure if this is related or not, but when it does boot up on power, once I select Linux from the boot options (dual booting with Windows), I get an error message at the top of the screen that stays there for maybe 10 seconds or so.
[1.506778] Initramfs unpacking failed: decoding failed
[1.520344] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Unable to read/write to IOMMU perf counter.
[1.606653] tpm-crb MSFT0101:00 can't request region for resource [mem 0xda5

Once this error is displayed and goes away, the LinuxMint boot logo appears, then a few seconds later, it goes to a black screen, shows the error message again from above. A few seconds later the error goes away and then the Mint login screen appears. If the laptop isn't plugged in, I get a black screen after I select linux from the boot options and that's it, no errors, no nothing, just a black screen.

As said, i'm completely new and have no clue what I am actually doing. I found a form online where someone else was having a similar issue but on a Dell laptop. Someone said to edit GRUB, which I followed their advice but it didn't seem to make a difference at all (not sure what I actually did and not sure how to get back to where I made that edit at).

Sorry for the long post but if anyone can assist, I appreciate it.

Not sure if this is needed or not, but read it helps to post the system report stuff.

I can't offer any sure solution, nor ever a cogent analysis for that matter, but I can tell you that your aren't alone. I've see exactly those same results on my ASUS VivoBook 15 X510QA laptop. It was connected to AC charging power at the time and so that variable doesn't seem to be the source of the issue. I never did manage to pin down the actual culprit as the problem eventually resolved itself and hasn't recurred since -- not so far at least. If it does and if I'm able to discover the underlying cause, I'll certainly pass it along. For now, I can only attribute it to "gremlins" that sometimes seem to find their way into early new releases.

The first one can be ignored, or you can fix it by going here: viewtopic.php?p=1836169#p1836169

Be aware that it might break again when the devs 'fix' it by switching to lz compression.

The second two are probably related. First, you should check for a BIOS update at the manufacturer's website and update your BIOS if one is available. Second, if you didn't start the installation in compatibility mode and if you didn't boot into the new OS with nomodeset, it might pay to reinstall using the instructions in the release announcement: https://linuxmint.com/rel_ulyana_cinnamon.php

You need the section titled "Solving freezes during the boot sequence". Don't use the nouveau.noaccel=1 option. The release notice assumes you have an nVidia card, which you don't have. All the other instructions are fine, just choose the AMD driver in driver manager. Once the driver is installed, you should be able to boot without nomodeset.

--------------------------------------------------------

1) Followed the steps for your first suggestion, which did get rid of the first error that was showing on the screen.
2) I updated my bios to the latest version available just before install of linux.
3) Don't recall doing anything with compatibility mode or doing anything with nomodeset (not sure what that is lol)
4) Read the article and going to do a reinstall using the information on that page and see what happens.

Thank you for the help.

I went through and followed the steps. Once it booted back up, it prompted me that my drivers needed to be updated. Once that completed, I did a power off and was able to boot up on battery only (which is the first time that has happened). The other two error messages are still there, but it didn't stop my laptop from booting, so not really worried about them.

I mentioned initially where another user with a Dell was having a similar problem, I recall in his post, he said that when he first powered up with the power plugged in, he could remove the ac power, unplug / use the battery and power back up and it would work fine. However, if he left the laptop powered off for a few hours / overnight, the next day the problem was be back again.

I didn't really pay attention closely if mine is doing that as well, when I power up in the morning, I typically leave the laptop on for the day. I am going to go ahead and power down for the night and check it in the morning and see if it will still boot on just the battery. I am hopeful that the information you provided has fixed this issue for good!

Taken me a while to get back on here and give an update. Still having the same issue where Mint doesn't want to boot if the power adapter isn't plugged in. Actually got a few hours free today to do some more messing around to see if I could figure out anything else useful.

In testing, I am guessing the issue has something to do with graphics card in this laptop. It is a little strange, I did a clean install of Ubuntu and then a clean install of Mint and both do the same thing. When I loaded the live version of Mint, I noticed it did the same thing as well, however, I now believe I was mistaken when I said it's not booting. It appears Mint is booting up but the desktop / login isn't actually being displayed. It's just a black screen. I semi-sorta figured this out by pulling the power from the laptop while in the middle of booting up. The menu bar appeared while running LM in Live, but there was no mouse cursor. I could click and see that it was doing what I told it to do, but nothing was actually showing up (yes I know, it doesn't make sense even to me while typing that out). Basically, the system will boot up, go to a black screen. I booted back into my installed version of LM, this time at the black screen I typed in my password and could hear that it logged in. If I press the menu key on the board to pull up the main menu and use the arrow keys (left key once and down arrow 7 times and enter enter) the system shuts down. That tells me everything is working but the graphics card.

Again, if the laptop is plugged into to power, everything works fine. This is only when trying to boot on battery.

In addition, I loaded up TailsOS and Kali and didn't have this issue at all, both of these loaded up on battery power with no problems.

I've wiped this laptop and it currently has a fresh install of LM on it. Open to any experiments / suggestions to find a solution to this issue.

After spending several hours experimenting, it looks I was able to get the issue fixed by upgrading the kernel. Using the Ukuu tool, it appears the stock kernel was 5.4.x. I upgraded to 5.7.1 just to see what would happen and I noticed a few things.

1) I was able to boot on battery power with no issues.
2) My laptop is running almost twice as fast as it was previously (boot-up time and general use).

Only setting change I had to do was disable secure boot. For now, my issue is fixed.

I've noticed there's a few new warning / error messages on boot, but it doesn't stop LM from loading. From what I can see, everything appears to be working correctly, if not better than before. I'm going to keep using this kernel version for now but if performance or other issues appear, ill add to this post (just in case someone else comes across this issue).

I had to experiment with a few of the kernels before I was able to get mine to boot-up correctly. Going on 24 hours now and everything is still working great on my laptop so far. I will note, when I tried to use a kernel that was higher than 5.7.1, I ran into issues where I couldn't get past GRUB, using the advanced boot options and selecting the stock kernel lets you get back into LM though. Then you can just experiment and try a different one till you find one that works for you. I am also running a Ryzen 5 chipset with a Radeon Vega graphics card. Last note, I had to disable secure boot in my bios to get the updated kernel to run.

The Ukuu tool, is a paid program ($15). I did find an older version on github that was free (which is what I used yesterday to experiment with). I am going to buy the updated software, just as a thank you to the dev that created that tool since it was a huge help in getting my laptop going correctly.

Not sure if links are allowed, but put them here to help someone else that might need it.

Github Older version (free): https://github.com/teejee2008/ukuu/releases (I used the first .deb link and it worked)

I (noobie here!) used to have the same problem.
(ASUS M509DA, AMD Ryzen 5 3500U)
After trying out many solutions posted in several forums, I used Mainline to update the kernel from 5.4 from 5.8.9 and it solved the problem. But Update Manager labels the new kernel as Unsupported tho. Anyway, the boot problem is solved now.
Thanks!

My pseudo-solution to this problem was booting into recovery mode and then selecting 'normal' boot option. It's weird, but it works for me.

There's a new 5.8 kernel from the normal repositories available in Mint Update Manager>View>Kernels.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Owner of an HP 14-dk0028wm laptop running Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa Mate with the same problem. Boot's up fine with power, black screen freeze when attempting to boot up on battery.

inxi -G shows Device-1 AMD PIcasso

Coming here to express my undying gratitude for everybody involved in this one, and in particular, @rthwm, and @teejee2008 on GitHub who's kindness allowed me to download and install Ukuu v18.9.1, which I'd never heard of before (thanks again for the tip on that one @rthwm), and when I ran it, it showed me as running Kernel Version 5.4.0.-73.82.

First thing I did was remove older Kernels with "sudo ukuu --purge-old-kernels"

Then I looked to see what was available with "ukuu --list"

Then I installed the next two-digit Kernel version up from what I had with "sudo ukuu --install v5.5"

Reboot.

Works perfectly booting on battery power!

"ukuu --check" shows me running Kernel version 5.5.0-050500.202001262030

No need for further messing around with it, the very first try worked perfectly and solved my very strange boot-fail black-screen mystery.

Cannot thank everyone involved enough for all their hard work, time, and trouble gone to, to get to the bottom of this one.

Just passing along my own experience with this one, by way of offering encouragement to anyone else who has fetched up on this distant shore, trying to solve their black-screen mystery when attempting to boot their machine on battery power.

It worked for me.

Perfectly, in fact.

And I very much hope it works for YOU, too.

Again, undying thanks and gratitude to all who came before, veni vidi vici.

I also want to thank you all.

I have an Acer AN515-43 and I had the same problem. I just updated to kernel v5.5 and it works just fine after the update!

It is slower to boot, but it's better than not being able to boot at all. Thank you again!

The 5.5 kernel is not supported in Mint, so we do not recommend using it.

If you are running LM20 or LM20.1, you can update to the 5.8 kernel in Update Manager. That kernel has been fixing problems people have had when booting when not plugged in to AC power.

To get the 5.8 kernel, open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Please use that, and NOT UKUU -- which is unsupported and may be dangerously unstable.
