Linux 20 cannot see my network

Post by tonyaimer »

I have managed to upgrade my Linux machine to Linux Mint 20 from Mint 18.3.

I cannot see my network any more but I have been able to use firefox and google to get to this website
so I am assuming my ethernet connection is OK. I have been able to do my online banking today with
Linux mint 20 and I got firefox to sync my passwords so that is all good.

There appears to be some problem ( maybe with a smb protocol my friend says? ) which needs to be addressed but I have
no idea on how to do that.

My network consists of 3 winXP machines, a Win 7 laptop and a printer that is connected directly
to my switch in my office from where I pick up my ADSL line.

This linux machine is connected by an ethernet cable to the switch from a different room and there is a WiFi extender
attached to this machine which appears to be working OK.

When I and click on the Network folder I get a windows network subfolder which if I click on it does nothing.
If I try to right click on it and open it I still get nothing.

A few days ago i was able to see the network from Linux Mint 18.3.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? I am a complete newbie to Linux and I concede that I know almost nothing
about the BASH shell.

I should mention that the Mint 20 was a clean installation as there was no recognised
way of upgrading from Mint 18.3.

I am using the cinnamon interface in both cases.
