Shutdown:Failed to unmount /oldroot

Post by stovdal »

Hi,
my first post here. My system is a desktop PC, dual boot with three hard drives, a SSD (sda) with Windows 10, an HD data disk (sdb) and another SSD (sdc) with Mint 20 Cinnamon. When shutting down a message pops up for about a second, 4-5 lines saying "Shutdown:Failed to unmount /oldroot: Device or Resource busy" and then a single line "Failed to finalize file systems, Ignoring", and the system shuts down without further problems. Is this something I should worry about ? What is /oldroot ?

Code: Select all

"Shutdown:Failed to unmount /oldroot: Device or Resource busy" and then a single line "Failed to finalize file systems, Ignoring"
Post the output of inxi -Fxz from a terminal and wrap it in code tags when you reply. You'll see the code tags icon </> when you reply.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. Some further googling points to a systemd issue. I do not know whether this (hoUPblDA/jY0) is related but according to Synaptic my systemd package is version 245.4-4ubuntu3.1. Crossing fingers for the next systemd update.

No. My processor is AMD A4 4000 without offboard graphics card.

My distro is Mint Ulyssa.

I don't have Linux Mint 20 <=> Ubuntu 20.04.
The problem is that "systemd_245.4-4ubuntu3" is the version of the repository.
But the version "systemd_245.4-4ubuntu3.4" is now available for update.
If it corrects the error, I don't know.

I change my grub code in /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
GRUB_TIMEOUT=2
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=noirq"

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=force"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="apm=power_off"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="console=ttyS0"

after: sudo update-grub in terminal

shutdown close without error

I just ran into this problem, thanks bratislav61.
That procedure worked.

UPDATE: Well it stopped working ... error is back, after about four reboots.

I am not familar with 'oldroot'. Why is it there, how did it get there, can it be deleted???

UPDATE: The procedure works for rebooting, not shutdown.

Hi Mintmann,

make sure it after updating grub not changed.

The line in grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX = "apm = power_off"

it should turn off the power when the computer shutdown.

With the system up and running what output do you get from command

Code: Select all

mount
That should tell us more about this strange /oldroot mount and give more clues as to what it is.

Let's a.so see the output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/fstab
to see if you have an unnecessary line in that which can be removed.

I don't understand why this problem showed up yesterday, all has been fine for quite some time.
My Kernel version is: 5.4.0-84-generic

I give up ... I'll have to re-install!
