Ventoy Persistence has become discouraging. What have I done wrong.?

Post by Resistor »

Installs and Boots fine, whether the Partition Table is msdos or GPT.
I finally found the -g option and it is now on a GPT Partition Table, Formatted as ext4.

I am at a loss after trying different things, including reinstalling a couple of times.

No Persistence option in the menu.
No Persistence in settings on re-boot.

Wouldn't know about the "Ventoy" app you are trying to use, but i have had good luck with "mkUSB" Installing Linux Mint live installer with good persistence that works well on bios mbr or uefi gpt system and sets the usb to boot/run and also installing the contained OS to each.
All in all mkUSB is easy to use, and if you or others would like I could post my own little GUI walk-through to setup your usb with persistence, I have not used the CLI of mkUSB.
PS: mkUSB is part of my must have app's to install with any new Linux installation.

Hi, Kseanfitz_1.

I tried mkUSB a couple of years ago. It locked my USB stick and I never spent the time trying to figure it out. I think I ended up trashing the stick.

I like what I've seen with Ventoy, very much, and expect to use it instead of MultiSystem.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Something that seems odd to me is the use of exfat and or fat16. some systems do not handle fat16 or even exfat well but fat32 is well excepted!
also Persistence.img and not a filesystem partition linked to the normal boot fat32 boot partition as a workaround for boot media file and partition size limitations imposed by (I think) uefi?!
The last persistent Linux mint live I made had a fat32 for the the boot files and the mint iso and a formatted partition of about 12gb for persistence and had boot options for non persistence, persistence, persistence to ram (that worked also because I specifically tested that option) and another option or two that I can't remember at this moment.

I expect Mint can handle the exfat and fat16 format, just fine.
It is a very limited application, anyway.

Persistence.img is contained in an ext4 filesystem partition. It seems to be reserving a dedicated space for ventoy settings, leaving the remainder available to other applications not related to ventoy.

I've never had success with persistence on a live system, before.

I do expect ventoy to work and consider it a pretty smart use of the tools available. Like, why has it not been done before smart.
