Random Rebooting After Mint 20 Install

Post by windsurfer »

Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon appears unstable after install. Linux Mint 19.3 rock solid stable. Installed Mint 20 Cinnamon on newly formatted drive with default partitioning, and tried running with and without NVIDIA drivers. After a short period of time of normal use, the system begins randomly rebooting. Tried removing all plug-in cards, but no change. Don't know how to diagnose.
Thanks

Here is the system report for the Mint 19.3 install. Cannot generate report for Mint 20 due to instability.

Re: Random Rebooting After Mint 20 Install

I believe this problem is a bug with Mint 20 Cinnamon. After verifying all of my hardware (add on cards, memory, and hard drive) was functioning properly, I was able to replicate this problem several times. I performed a clean install of Mint 20 Cinnamon with default partitioning, installed updates and upgrades, and then installed the recommended Nvidia graphics driver. I then opened several applications and waited. After a short period of time the system would reboot. With further use the time between reboots would decrease until the system became unusable. I tried this several times with the same result.

Today, I tried installing Mint 20 xfce. It has been running fine for hours now with no problems. It appears the problem is with the Cinnamon version of Mint 20 on this hardware. I have Mint 20 Cinnamon installed on other systems and have not had any issues.

Here is my system description with Mint 20 xfce:

Spoke to soon. Mint 20 xfce rebooted after approximately 5 hours. It appears the bug is not just a Cinnamon problem.
