How do I do a full install to a USB with 19.3?

Post by Excaliber8878 »

How do I install Linux mint 19.3 to a USB. Us this the better option than trying to use mkusb?

I have a temperamental older 2009 HP Compaq that refuses to boot mkusb.

Thanks for your help.

If I assume you have an .iso file and want to create a bootable live USB drive, and I assume you're in a Linux Mint Cinnamon OS, then do this:

Right click on the .iso file, and select the option that says something like "make bootable USB"

Or, start the "USB Image Writer" from the menu, select your .iso image and your USB drive. Then click "Write"

BUT, it might be that your 2009 HP Compaq is refusing to boot from a USB because of the USB drive brand/model. I'd recommend trying a different brand or model.

If you're asking how to install to a USB in such as way that you can use that USB with persistent storage, then take a look at this:

One more ...

I had some really old laptops (circa 2003) that I wanted use with Linux Mint. They would NOT boot from a good USB drive. The only solution I had was to create Linux Mint installer DVDs, which worked perfectly.

I still have those DVDs, but the laptops were recycled for parts years ago.

Edit: I used xfburn to burn the .iso image to DVD. Brasero should work too.

As for creating the live session installer in the first place, the latest installation guide mentions using the usb image writer, as Welcome mentioned above, from Mint, but from a Windows environment, using etcher: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... /burn.html and Rufus is another popular tool for Windows I've seen users mention using.

So you need two usb devices, the first with that live session installer environment, plus the one as the target for install.

and there's that tutorial for it: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=287353

but, alternately, this one is specific for a single device setup with persistence(from Windows): viewtopic.php?f=42&t=317153

a different one from Laurent85: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=229086

"How do I install Linux mint 19.3 to a USB?"

I have LM20 installed on a 128GB USB flash drive, and it works perfectly. This is NOT a "live" LM USB flash drive.

Create a FULL system on USB:
1. Plug in a 64GB USB flash drive (this drive is empty, and LM will be installed to this USB drive).
2. Boot from a second USB drive that has a bootable live Mint on it.
3. Start the installer.
4. Point the installer to the empty 64GB USB drive and install on that.
5. Do not select LVM when installing on the 64GB USB flash drive.
