Mint 19.3 to 20 upgrade via Upgrade Manager?

Post by earthlingkc »

Most of my laptops are on 19.3 (Mate) and I tried to manually upgrade one to 20 that didn't go well (more steps than in past), was able to restore fine. Will we see a Mint 20 upgrade via Upgrade Manager anytime soon?

I did the manual upgrade and it mostly worked, but some things weren't working as nice so I did a fresh install of Mint 20.0 Cinnamon which is working nice. I think fresh install is prolly the best way.

If you have lots of laptops, either way will be a lot of work, but I think less work to fresh install.

Doubtful. A codebase upgrade (e.g., LM 19.x to LM 20) is a significant process, certainly more so than than an in-line upgrade (e.g., LM 19.2 to LM 19.3).

Note that LM 19.x is still supported until April 2023.

Hello, earthlingkc.

It is unlikely that the Mint 19.3 update manager will ever be extended to do an in-place upgrade from Mint 19.3 to Mint 20.
The Update Manager has got the ability to do minor in-place upgrades only:
+ from 18 to 18.1 / 18.2 / 18.3
+ from 19 to 19.1 / 19.2 / 19.3

Major in-place upgrades have always been feasible only with the help of the appropriate mintupgrade tool.

The in-place upgrade from Mint 19.3 to Mint 20 can only be done by following Clem's step by step instruction carefully:
How to upgrade to Linux Mint 20

Best regards,
Karl

Thanks all. I thought I recall upgrading 18.x to 19 via Upgrade Manager but maybe it was manual as well. Guess I'll fresh install at some point.

Man's memory can be so terribly wrong.
Provided you upgraded from 18.3 to 19 in-place, then you should have followed this instruction by Clem: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19.
Following Clem's steps involves using the appropriate mintupgrade tool.

fresh install of major update is the only way to go if you don't want more issues than what could happen in a fresh install, which is very unlikely.

I have 4 laptops and manage family and a couple friend's laptops (about 8 more) who are not techies so prefer to avoid fresh install. And yeah I'd check this site for the best manual method. Every time it's worked fine but my 19.3 to 20 didn't quite work. Restore was fine though (I do a disk image backup/restore rather than Timeshift restore).

I may wait several months or more to see if upgrade kinks are worked out and try again. Future updates to Mint 20 might make a difference too. Otherwise will do fresh installs by the time 19.3 support expires.

I have a similar situation, and I leave such people on the currently supported LM x.3 version is.

For example, as of today, they're currently on LM 19.3, and will remain so for the near future. When LM 20.3 gets released (approximately Dec 2021), they will get a fresh install of that prior to April 2023 when LM 19.3 support ends.

Well, future minor releases like Mint 20.1, 20.2 and the final 20.3, they will not change the in-place upgrade from 19.3 to 20.
In all cases, the major upgrade step will be from 19.3 to 20.
What you may hope for, however, is that due to updates, which the underlying Ubuntu 18.04 (Mint 19.3) and Ubuntu 20.04 (Mint 20) keep on receiving, problems may disappear, which currently are caused by upgrading the underlying base Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 20.04, when in-place upgrading Mint 19.3 to Mint 20.

^Yeah, understood. Just meant that some of the issues showing up today with 19.3 to 20 may hash out over time if update scripts or other updated packages happen to resolve any upgrade kinks. The 19.3 to 20 upgrade seems more complicated than last several major revision upgrades though.

I have one laptop that has been upgraded from several major versions over time, I think from 16 to 19 over years, maybe 17 to 19 and still works fine. Though it may have some unnecessary baggage not cleaned up.
