Post by mjwurtz »

@Larry78723 : it looks like the same problem : last update (base-files 19.0.2) seems to have broken something in systemd : a lot of services don't start, so even in rescue mode, network won't start (in addition to the others mandatory services like login, cgroup management, graphic display manager, etc...)
The effect is the same on Cinnamon and Mate version, and even when starting at level 3 (no graphic interface) : blank screen after login...
I tried different approach like reverting to base-files 19.0.1 in rescue mode, and I'm now looking at the differences between the 19.0.1 and 19.0.2 packages
I just hope that someone from Mint developpers team will post a fix soon.
For all the others : avoid to install the upgrade of base-files : it will brick your machine !

Same here, broke after update. Do not update it yet.
What i tried: boot with nomodeset to grub with different resolution options does not work.
Connect to external monitor no difference
live usb works.
This is first time happening to me in 10 years for a simple update to break the system so much.
If no solution found, i will back-up my files and do a fresh install.

Only packet upgraded yesterday was base-files:all 19.0.1 19.0.2
Does anybody have a solution ? perhaps revert to 19.0.1 ? And how to ?

Good luck to all !
I tried

Code: Select all

apt-get install base-files=10.1ubuntu2.10
but nothing changed.
I'm still searching the error in the dbus, without success. As I mentioned here: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=331498 , I found some issues with dbus in less /home/myuser/.xsession-errors
Could you check if you have also dbus erros ?

BR
After upgrade (without initial reboot) I tried to install yandex.disk deb package, and there were dbus error. After this Synaptic stucks. Process killing was helpful to unstuck synaptic, but installation of package doesnt work again. After reboot I have got a brick.

Well, by now I guess its clear that there's no point in posting separate thread and that this is a widespread problem. Exactly the same issue here. Bricked business laptop that needs to work in the morning.

I managed to get ethernet working in rescue mode (after setting up 8.8.8.8 as nameserver in resolv.conf) so Im hoping for an update/fix soon

Nope. I just managed to run apt and update all packages hoping for a fix. Then I saw this thread.

But was thinking.... Is upgrading to v20 through CLI tool an option to consider?

Same issue here, bricked my main PC, luckily I haven't installed the updates on my laptop yet.

Code: Select all

base-files 19.0.2
cfis-utils 2:6.8-1ubuntu1.1
These two updates broke my system. If you haven't already, don't install them until this is fixed. Luckily I realized before I updated my laptop.

I have no idea how to fix this...awaiting a solution like everybody else...

Do they even test these updates before pushing them out?

Not sure.

As I have a duel boot, I have booted to Windows, downloaded and burned a copy of Linux Mint on CD, then booted from it.

Now copying important data from old linux mint filesystems to Windows filesystem / drive.

Once that is finished, will do a clean install of Mint, copy important data back from windows filesystem, and then resetup things.

What a pain.

I doubt a fix will come quick enough, and I need to get it back up asap, hence this course of action.

I was thinking the same thing.

But I think it is quite risky to upgrade when the system is not stable.

The problem seems to be systemd/dbus related. Both are important components.

The updated cifs-utils 2:6.8-1ubuntu1.1 is innocent. It does not cause the desaster.
It has been installed on 2 systems here today. Both systems have been rebooted at minimum twice afterwards. No problems whatsoever during startup.

My current hypothesis is:
The suspected culprit is the update package base-files 19.0.2 and only 19.0.2. This is why only Mint 19 Tara systems are affected. Cf. this post here
Mint 19.1 Tessa, Mint 19.2 Tina and Mint 19.3 Tricia should be unaffected, though they receive(d) base-files 19.1.3, 19.2.1 and 19.3.1 respectively.

My Mint 19.3 is still alive. It received update base-files 19.3.1. Mint 19.3 was rebooted after the update. Mint 19.3 came up without any problems. In fact, this is where I am typing this post.

  • When recover menu appears, select to go to ROOT prompt;
  • Enter your root password;
  • Type:

Damn that bug was so tricky. So many symptoms. Hard to find the real culprit.

Many respects leocansan. I did your steps from the command line:

1) wait about 20 sec after boot ( boot is slower than usual)
2) ctrl+alt+f1
3) login as root
4) service lightdm stop (to stop the switching to graphics mode)
5) backed up the directories /var/run and /run so as to be able to undo anything if needed
6) followed your steps
7) system up and running!

Thank you very much!!!
