Hello all,

To recover from systemd-logind not starting, just follow this instruction:
  • Boot your computer;
  • Press SHIFT key while booting;
  • Select Advanced mode -> any recover booting option;
  • When recover menu appears, select to go to ROOT prompt;
  • Enter your root password;
  • Type:
    cp -r /var/run/* /run [PRESS ENTER]
    cd /var [PRESS ENTER]
    pwd [PRESS ENTER]
    The above command has to show '/var'
    rm -rf run [PRESS ENTER]
    ln -s /run [PRESS ENTER]
  • reboot [PRESS ENTER]
  • And done.
God bless you all,

L.
I tried this method and it did allow me to get past the splash screen and to the the login screen. However, when I put in my password, the login screen just pops up again.

Unfortunately, those steps didn't save my laptop...

Maybe one of the many things I previously tried to do to solve the problem further broke my system... :(

Happy to report the system is fully operational again.

Again thankyou so much, very grateful for the help.

And I will give myself a kick in the pants for not having a adequate backup process in place and use this as a opportunity to do so now.

Again Thankyou, Ellis.

Please create a new thread with your issue. A looping login screen is an issue commonly seen on the forum and sometimes indicates a full (or nearly full) root directory.

Yep! This worked! Thanks leocansan!!!!! (I'm still running Mint 14, and the base-util for 19 pooched my system as well.)

FWIW, After I installed base-util, the update manager offered cfis-util, but was unable to install it. Then my print queue stopped working. I rebooted to get the print queue to restart, but got the black-screen-of-bootlessness. I had been working on it for about 6 1/2 hours, preparing for a complete reload, and found this.

Thanks a million, leocansan!!!!!

@karichen - I don't understand how pem's computer ever booted with these differences in mount points or doesn't the mount point in the lsblk data matter?

FROM fstab:

Code: Select all

# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=5563abf4-9a1f-468c-91f5-fe72e61c47fc /               ext4    errors=remount-ro,discard 0       1

# /home was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=d6d6cfb6-b2f5-48e4-bfa1-841f52a3a869 /home           ext4    defaults,discard        0       2

# /opt was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=0b9bdc3a-6002-41d1-857b-f8e95deeda22 /opt            ext4    defaults,discard        0       2

# swap was on /dev/sda7 during installation
UUID=cb59760c-3629-45a0-9e11-a2512adad291 none            swap    sw              0       0

FROM lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,FSTYPE,UUID,MOUNTPOINT

Code: Select all

sda      477G
├─sda1  29.8G ext4     5563abf4-9a1f-468c-91f5-fe72e61c47fc /mnt1
├─sda2     1K
├─sda5 219.8G ext4     d6d6cfb6-b2f5-48e4-bfa1-841f52a3a869 /mnt
├─sda6 219.8G ext4     0b9bdc3a-6002-41d1-857b-f8e95deeda22 /mnt2
└─sda7   7.6G swap     cb59760c-3629-45a0-9e11-a2512adad291 [SWAP]
Just to clear this up... (I don't think it's relevant to the case.) The latter is when the system was booted from an USB stick and I mounted the disks manually on /mnt*. Since very little or nothing in terms of communication works when in rescue mode I can't get the requested data out from it otherwise. Sorry for not making this clear.

Thank you, it worked!

I can just add that, if you can boot the system from a USB stick (as I had done), you can mount the root partition manually on for instance /mnt, and the do the above commands in that directory. Carefully, since you have to translate the paths... However, var/run should still link to /run. (Or possibly ../run, but I haven't tried this.)

Genius level awarded to leocansan on this one. Good work fella, and thanks for sharing.

One small question... my issue was actually on my wife's Mint 19 laptop. There are several other laptops floating around in my biosphere which have the same version of OS on them, and some are set to autoupdate (grandparent, etc.). Has someone removed the offending patch from the repo or replaced it with a functioning one?

Anyway, kudos to leocansan again.

Thanks,
Dom.

Thanks @leocansan. Your solution isn't 100% complete but the fact that you posted this early helped a huge number of people and it immediately pointed us in the right direction and sped up our analysis of the issue. Many thanks for this.

You tackled the main issue by repairing /var/run and making it point to /run, but two small things:

- Some people can't remove /var/run in recovery mode (I think that's why it doesn't work for everybody), their FS is read-only. Remounting / in RW mode tackles the issue.
- base-files should be downgraded back to 19.0.1 after this, otherwise you're missing content. This isn't critical, but it needs fixing all the same.

I put a complete solution at viewtopic.php?f=143&t=331605.

Clem notes in his post on the issue https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=143&t=331605 "About 2h ago, the repositories were rolled back to version 19.0.1 of the base-files package. It can take up to 48h for this change to be picked up by all the mirrors." so it is possible those with autoupdate may run into issues.
