Slow boot after PASSWORD login

Post by Nadeem14 »

Hey LM community, hope you guys are doing good.
I have a slow boot problem where after i login to cinnamon (yes after i enter my password screen, not the BOOT screen) . it takes more than 3 minutes before i see the home screen, until then i get a BLACK SCREEN WITH CURSOR and nothing else. However am facing this issue since i upgraded my LM to version 20 from 19.3 through a update and not a fresh install. The problem has been here for a lot of months because I updated my laptop post the second week of LM releasing version 20.

Here is a few information abut my computer. Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Slow boot after PASSWORD login

Post by SMG »

snapd is not supported in LM20. I do not know if or how that might be interfering.

Please provide:

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze critical-chain

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep -i "error\|warn\|fail" | tee >(gzip --stdout > journalctl_$USER.gz)
The second command will write the current system log problems to the file journalctl_(yourname).gz. The file will be located in your /home/login_name directory. I'm hoping it might provide clues as to why Cinnamon is taking so long to load. Please attach it to your next post.

Old packages interfering seems to be a common issue in cases where people upgraded and now have slow boot. You might want to go back through your upgrade checklist to make sure you did address all the package changes between the versions. The person in this thread [Solved] Ultra slow boot on Linux Mint 20 found "It was probably just some old package or configuration that was conflicting." and listed the command he/she used to clear the system. I am not familiar with that command string (I did not upgrade), but it helped the person in the thread and another person to whom I passed along the link.

snapd is not supported in LM20.

I tried the command from the thread you posted. I still got the same slow boot after restart. I also removed snapd completely.

My crash Reports: PID: 2827 (appimagelaunche)
This is the application which is spamming your logs because the files for it can not be found.

This is the first instance it is mentioned:

Code: Select all

Oct 23 15:15:51 anonymous24 systemd[1958]: appimagelauncherd.service: Failed to execute command: No such file or directory
Oct 23 15:15:51 anonymous24 systemd[1958]: appimagelauncherd.service: Failed at step EXEC spawning /usr/bin/appimagelauncherd: No such file or directory
Oct 23 15:15:57 anonymous24 appimagelauncherfs[2137]: rmdir: failed to remove '/run/user/1000/appimagelauncherfs/': No such file or directory
This is the last time it is mentioned in the file you uploaded. I scrolled through pages and pages of this three line sequence to reach the end of the file.

Code: Select all

Oct 23 17:32:41 anonymous24 systemd[26724]: appimagelauncherd.service: Failed to execute command: No such file or directory
Oct 23 17:32:41 anonymous24 systemd[26724]: appimagelauncherd.service: Failed at step EXEC spawning /usr/bin/appimagelauncherd: No such file or directory
Oct 23 17:32:41 anonymous24 systemd[1944]: appimagelauncherd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
I presume these lines are also related to the above although they only happened a couple of times and not repeatedly like the prior three lines.

Code: Select all

Oct 23 15:16:48 anonymous24 appimagelauncherfs[1959]: Error: could not find registered AppImage: /.Trash
Oct 23 15:16:48 anonymous24 appimagelauncherfs[1959]: Error: could not find registered AppImage: /.Trash-1000

Did it remove any files? Did it exit with any error messages?

I did notice this mention of an app "portmaster" which could not be found, but I do not know if the command may have cleared it.

Code: Select all

Oct 23 15:16:36 anonymous24 cinnamon-session[1976]: WARNING: t+23.36474s: Failed to start app: Unable to start application: Failed to execute child process “/var/lib/portmaster/portmaster-start” (No such file or directory)
I do not know how you are/were using AppImageLauncher and how you upgraded it for LM20, but something is not correct in the setup. I do not know if cleaning this up will clear your issue, but this issue needs addressed.
