password refusal
I am trying to install a piece of software into my mint 19.2 setup but within terminal and for the first time it does not recognise my password, I have not changed anything and as a test I also tried to do the same thing on my other laptop which also runs mint 19.2 but as expected just the same problem.
My Q is why has this happened and is there an easy fix.
many thanks

Re: password refusal
Is it actually telling you that the password was incorrect? Sometimes people get confused when they don't see characters show on the terminal as they're typing the password, but this is normal (prior to modern Mint).
Definitely not using Num or Caps Lock by mistake? Are you using sudo(8)? IE:

sudo some --command -h -e -re
What command are you running?I use Linux Mint 18.3 with Cinnamon in a VirtualBox VM for testing & sandboxing.

Re: password refusal
I was trying to install Brave browser following the install instructions within terminal when I enter my password it reports "command not found" this has never happened before.it is the same p/w I use to access software manager which works ok.
Re: password refusal
What do you type in for it to say command not found?
It doesn't sound like a password problem but some sort of syntax error.
Please try it again then copy what you typed and all the error message into a reply here.

Re: password refusal
I second buteman. Sounds like you just mistyped something.

If it's not a typing mistake you may have been hacked.

Re: password refusal
Hi,all thanks for your replies, the command typed in is my p/w it then reports "command not found" and believe me I have not miss typed anything, Hacked how can I tell?
Re: password refusal
If you show us exactly what you typed (obviously without the password) then we can determine what went wrong, otherwise we run the risk of chasing our tales. If you're just opening up the terminal and randomly typing in your password, then certainly that won't work, because your password is not a command. Also show us the exact and full error message. Usually command not found errors include what wasn't found.

Re: password refusal
Did you think you have to type in your password just because you started up a terminal?longshanks68 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 4:47 pmHi,all thanks for your replies, the command typed in is my p/w it then reports "command not found" and believe me I have not miss typed anything, Hacked how can I tell?
You only type in your password when asked such as when you run some command using sudo. Supposing you did
Code: Select all
cat /etc/shadow
Code: Select all
cat /etc/shadow
cat: /etc/shadow: Permission denied
Code: Select all
sudo cat /etc/shadow
[sudo] password for norman:
SO typing in your password is a response to being asked for it.

Very, very unlikely. This is not windows.SimpleLinuxUser wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 9:39 pmIf it's not a typing mistake you may have been hacked.
