After installation problem black screen - Laptop Asus

Post by mintandteatree »

Hi guys I'm have experienced some trouble after installation.

So when I'm booting its sometimes just some black screen or just some blank cursor.
I'm trying changing my kernel like mentioned here but still got the same problem. viewtopic.php?f=90&t=346086&p=1994100&h ... ooting#top

Hi mintandteatree and welcome to the forum.

You don't seem to have any Graphics drivers.

If you can get to your Desktop then launch 'Driver Manager' and install what it suggests and reboot. Failing that, if it was working properly, do you have a Timeshift snapshot that you can use?

The data you posted indicates the kernel did not change.
System:
Kernel: 5.4.0-58-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.3.0
Desktop: Cinnamon 4.8.6 wm: muffin 4.8.1 dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

If the new kernel does not work, you may want to consider updating your BIOS/UEFI.

When one boots in Recovery Mode as the OP indicates was done, no graphics drivers are loaded. Recovery Mode is similar to running in Compatibility Mode when booting from the ISO as they both disable the graphics drivers.

Hi DorsetUK,
Its because i just using timeshift so the driver has not installed yet. In this setting i can't change my screen brightness. I also tried both the recommended driver and open-source driver but still got the same problem. In this setting i can't change my screen brightness.

I do not understand what that means or how it might be relevant to this issue. What are the three options?

Sorry i mean its 3 pair so there is 6 option in advance grub loader. Prior to 4 options before installing the new kernel.
More or less looks like this

Code: Select all

Kernel 5.8
Kernel 5.8 Recovery
Kernel 5.4
Kernel 5.4 Recovery
Kernel 5.4
Kernel 5.4 Recovery

Those options correspond to the kernels you have installed. You have the option to run each kernel in regular mode or recovery mode (which disables some drivers). Every time you install a new kernel two new options will appear. Every time you delete a kernel then two options disappear.

If you have the laptop plugged in to the wall charger, do you get the graphics problem when booting? Does the problem only occur when you are running on battery power?

It happen plug or unplug. Interestingly one of recovery mode give me GUI. Which i use to write this. Compared to other with just CLI.
Same Information with first post. Kernel 5.4.0-58-generic and no driver

One uses Recovery Mode when there is something wrong. Recovery Mode disables drivers so one can get into the system to do repairs.

I do not understand why you tell us you can recover your system using a Timeshift snapshot yet you are continuing to boot in Recovery Mode. Your system is not being restored if you have to boot in Recovery Mode.

Are you dual-booting with Windows 10?
How did you install Mint?

Because then i can using GUI in recovery mode after using timeshift. Before using timeshift in recovery mode i only can use CLI mode. Hope that explain why i tell about using timeshift yet I'm still booting from recovery mode.

I'm just upgrading my storage so it's only running Mint right now.

Right now I'm using recovery mode with kernel 5.4.

One uses Timeshift snapshots to restore the system to a properly working state. That does not sound like what is happening in your case. If Mint was working properly then you would not be booting through Recovery Mode.

I suggest you use your installation usb/dvd and boot to a live session of Mint. Let us know if that works.

Yes you are right.
I can use the live boot just fine.
I'm currently trying different kernel and got more stable booting.

If it's "more stable" then it is probably still not working properly. You are probably better off to back up your personal data and re-install Mint.

I'm thinking maybe its the driver or the kernel. But maybe i need to reinstall first.
