Can't help you, but I have exactly the same problem. Does your laptop only have UEFI which cannot be switched off, and only USB 3.0, like mine?

In your bios ensure you have done the following..
Sata mode = AHCI
Enable UEFI
Disable fast boot
Disable secure boot.
If you can boot into your live usb, then in terminal copy & paste the following command and post the results back here in between the code display brackets, </> the 5th icon above the text box.

Thank you, kato181, but the machine won't boot at all. It never gets far enough to open a terminal window.

How did you create the bootable usb in the first place?

With several tools. Rufus, mintstick, standard Mint. All to no avail. It won't boot from dvd either. I have more than one machine.
