New Installation of Linux Mint 19.2 Fails to Connect to Internet [Solved].

Post by dmburkus »

I searched for similar topics, but either the details/diagnostics, or proposed solutions, do not seem to fit my situation.

I attempted to install Linux Mint directly from a disk, without success, so I ran "Darik's Boot and Nuke" ("DBan") to completely erase the two hard drives, and after that the installation was successful. However, now that it is working, the PC can no longer connect to the internet.

This is an old LG machine (it was made for Windows XP), and before installing I tested the operating system on the machine by booting directly from the disk I created, without any connectivity or other issues. After installing the operating system, however, the machine failed to connect (the little wi-fi symbol shows a red "x"), I tested the cable (by connecting it to a machine running Windows), and there are no problems there. Rather than trying to write the details, it would be better to post a diagnostic analysis, I think (from the other posts that I read), though I do not know how to generate that.

Any assistance would be very deeply appreciated.

Thank you, Sleeper12. I just read a post about "system report" and was trying to decipher it when I came across your message. Apparently you are asking for the same thing...so, here is it (sorry, .txt files moved to the Windows PC get garbled, and I hope this is separated and formatted suitably):

So much for formatting, I guess. Anyway, I will have to go out now, and will be back 6 or 7 hours later.

Are you trying to get wifi or ethernet going? I don't see a wifi adapter present.

Are you saying you can't connect to the internet via cable or via wifi? Neither your system report nor your lspci output show a wifi card on your Gigabyte model: 8i915-LGE motherboard. I checked the Gigabyte website and they no longer list any specs for your motherboard.

Curious? I found the following, albeit using a duckduckgo search, the Gigabyte search engine is reported to be fussy about matching case exactly.
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA ... v-1x/sp#sp
In any case, there is no wireless network interface on the board, RJ45 cable only. If you must have WiFi you will need an appropriate PCI or PCIe card (this m/b has both types of socket).

Thanks to everyone who replied. I am trying to connect via an ethernet cable, not wifi. However the icon (which in the previous version of the operating system showed a cable that was connected or not) is the wifi wave icon.

As I said, I did not change anything, other than install the new operating system, and the internet connection worked when I ran the o/s before from the disk, to test it on this machine. I also did not change any of the settings of the new Linux installation, other than turn off the power saving features (so the machine never turns off or goes into sleeping or hibernation mode), though I made these changes after noting that the machine was not connection to the internet.

I checked both the cable and the connection -- that is, I connected the Windows PC I am using now to the internet using the same cable as is now attached to the Linux machine -- so it is not a problem with either the cable or the modem.

When I first started running the older version of Linux on that machine, I seem to recall having a similar problem, but I cannot remember what was done to fix it.

Yes, it should have disconnected, then reconnected. Try shutting all down, then restart router/modem & machine.

Thank you very much, Sleeper12. Apparently it was necessary to unplug everything, wait a couple of minutes, replug, and then start the PC. After doing so, it was able to connect to the internet. I am very pleased! Thank you very much for your help once again! Please have a great day.
