[SOLVED] Random black screen on boot (nvidia)

Hi, a fresh install of the last cinamon on my lenovo 5 pro 2021
gave me quite some headaches on the GPU (amd + nvidia) part.
First scaling was not working as the screen is QHD but now 1.25 scale works great!
I am still getting weird errors on acpi drivers or something on boot.
I am not able to control the screen brightness with the hardkeys (though the icon with % appears on the screen when using the keys), sometimes xbacklight works, sometimes it does not just like sometimes I boot on a blackscreen sometimes I don't... (I feel like shouting NVIDIA FU like some did in the past ^^)
I tried all kinds of online solutions like setting the grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=video"
or saving nvidia xorg conf and adding Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" but no luck
ask me for any shell output, i'll post them gladly.

You can safely ignore the ACPI boot errors, hardware manufacturers do not perfectly adhere to Linux specification. I don't know about the brightness issue though.

in fact I updated the title as the most important matter is that I get sometimes a black screen just after boot before login screen.
It seems to me as with the xbacklight command working randomly that the drivers are somehow not properly loaded...

With that new of a processor, your computer needs to be running at least the 5.8 kernel. Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

The fact that line says you have Radeon Graphics and there is no AMD graphics device listed is a bit concerning. It's possible your system needs a kernel even newer than the 5.8 kernel in order to run properly. Or do you have the onboard graphics turned off in the BIOS/UEFI?

FYI: This ISO Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) has the 5.8 kernel.

update done but unfortunately still ended on a black screen on 2nd boot...
Integrated gpu is indeed disable in BIOS, as soon as I switch from discrete gpu to dynamic gpu, pc will freeze on acpi errors screen.

If that was the boot prior to your current one and you stopped it by pressing the power button, run the following in a terminal:
journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which you stopped with the power button) in reverse order (so the reason for the black screen should be near the top) and sends it to termbin. It will return with a url address you should post in your next reply.

If you have booted twice since the black screen, replace the -1 with -2.

I suspect your system needs a kernel newer than 5.8.

This thread Ubuntu MATE 20.04 with RTX 3070 on Ryzen 5900 - black screen after boot indicates the person used the latest which was 5.10.14 at that time. There is an Ubuntu 5.10-oem kernel available by running sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04b and then rebooting.

I believe the latest version of Ubuntu which came out a few weeks ago is using a 5.11 kernel, but I'm not sure of the process to obtain it.

It appears you are still using the acpi_backlight=video kernel parameter. I do not know if that makes a difference in this issue.

Both amdgpu and nvidia attempted to load for both boot cycles and both boot cycles show the failure of the firmware "green sardine" for the amdgpu.

You can use the information in this post to obtain the firmware. There is also information in that post on installing newer kernels.

Both boot cycles also had a kernel oops related to the amdgpu driver. It's possible that might clear if the green sardine firmware is installed, but I do not know that for sure. It's also possible a kernel newer than 5.8 would clear it.

Both boot cycles loaded the nvidia driver. The difference between the boot cycles is the -2 boot cycle had an X Server core dump. If I recall correctly, those do produce black screens.

It appears adding firmware and a newer kernel may help your situation. You have very new hardware so a bit of testing may be necessary to get all to work well.

You can check Mesa version by running glxinfo -B. I see you added the kisak-ppa, so I would expect your Mesa version is at least 21.0 and may even be newer. For reference, the current LM20.1 Mesa is 20.2.6.

I do not see any graphic issues in the file. It appears you were able to successfully suspend the computer for the night and then resume. Because your hardware is so new I am not sure, but, given there were no errors regarding amdgpu, I would expect you would now get graphics if you switched to Hybrid graphics mode in the BIOS/UEFI. You may not have a need or desire to do so, but it should be available for you if you do.

Give it a few days or a week and let us know if the black screen issues are now gone.

Do you still have the acpi_backlight=video kernel parameter there? Have you tested to see how things are if you remove it?

With new hardware, I think newer kernels are often the only way to get default keys working because those newer kernels would have the drivers. I do not know if drivers for your computer are yet included in a newer kernel, so you would have to test and see.
